During your interview, a seasoned detective will be asking you questions, and those folks have a strong BS meter running. May I suggest that you stop the public "honing" and get hold of Grantar through PM and hammer something out that is believable and you can sell?

    Good luck to you.
Yeah that makes complete sense. I did pm him earlier just waiting for a reply.

    Thanks for the input

Is the time line any different for people moving into OC with an existing CA permit? With the permit only being valid 90 days after moving, the wait times outlined here go way way beyond that.

I think you are on the right track. Ever go to a broken down scrape and build sight occupied by homeless people?

          My ordeal

I moved to SoCal from Seattle in May 2015. In WA state, the process by law takes no more than 30 days. I have had a concealed carry license for nearly 30 years. WA state is "Shall Issue". In the (optional) reason box on the application, I put "Because". I had no idea that the process here was so ****ed.

I requested an interview in April. In July, I was told my interview was November 3. Ridiculous!

November 3, I was told my application would likely be denied because my good cause basically only included self defense reasons. The interviewer told me OC was now requiring demonstrable threats or regular (provable) needs to carry large sums of money. I asked him if the 20+ people in the waiting room were all business people who regularly carry large sums of money and he said he doubted it and a lot of them would be refused too. He said I could put my application in and hope his sergeant would approve it, but he advised me NOT to get the livescan because if it was denied, then I would have a denial on my record and that would mean I would likely never get a permit. I told him to please put it through and let's see what happens. I was so pissed! I couldn't believe that I have carried for 30 years and now CA was going to deny me my Constitutional right.

Well, a few days ago, I got my conditional approval letter telling me to go get my livescan!!

                Just picked up my renewal.

A good cause statement doesn't have to be too extreme. I think that unless you live in a bubble, you do have a good cause in the course of your everyday life. What is needed is to take some time, and put some thought into when and where you are most at risk.

I gave three reasons but what was focused on was my work related cause.

                        My renewal timeline.

Aug 25 renewal app and docs emailed in, immediate reply of "received Thank you"

Late October I inquired about how long training certs are good for and was told 6 months but to wait for the approval or go ahead and get he training done email.

Jan 5th went ahead and did the renewal training just because, email it in and
got the "received, Thank you email on the 6th.

No info received between any of those email dates.

I expired on the 5th of January. Hard to be patient but I know they are busy.

did you expire? and if so did you ping them with an inquiry email? Just currious.
Thanks for your info and timeline.

My Orange County CCW Application experience from Start to Finish in 260 days

I just got my CCW after 260 days from making my first appointment. I have learned a few ways to speed it up, hopefully my experience will help new applicants.

April 25, 2016 - Initial Interview request via website

June 1, 2016 - Initial interview at OCSD, and Livescan done
                              - Livescan took more than 6 months to complete!! so I would suggest that this is the FIRST thing that you do, even before making your request. The interview took about 15 minutes, and they had all the information about you and your history with police. Even google maps of your home! This is where you explain your good cause. Bring as much supporting documentation as possible, The investigator didn't keep all of it, and kept only a few relevant. OCSD really wants you to get a CCW, everyone in the building from the ground floor security to receptionist to investigator were ultra friendly and professional. Oh, remember to park in the correct parking lot on N Flower, and TAKE your receipt, the CCW can validate you parking.

Sep 28, 2016 - Received a "Conditional Approval pending Livescan", yay! I though I was almost done and just wanted for them to get my Livescan results. There is a number you can call to check the status of the Livescan Investigation, I checked once or twice a week, but no change, so I just forgot about it. Little did I know, the livescan was not the only thing they were missing / waiting for

November 28, 2016 - Out of the blue, I received another letter "Conditional approval pending training". I wasn't too excited because I didn't know how many more hoops I would have to wait through. I thought the previous conditional approval was the last letter.

Dec 6, 2016 - I took my training, which was more like a test, (more on that on that horrible experience in another post) and then went to to range a few days later. I tested on 2 handguns. I was a bit nervous about it, but the instructor was very professional, and friendly. The test consisted of demonstrating safe handling, shooting a man sized paper target from 2 distances, ~5 yards and ~7 yards (can't recall exactly). A total of 75ish rounds were shot from each handgun. It was not a bullseye sharpshooter test, you just wanted to hit the body target. It was a lot of time reloading especially since one of my handguns could only take 5 rounds in the magazine. Ive been shooting a handgun for less than a year and only at the range, with no formal training, other than youtube videos. I've put through ~1500 rounds through each handgun and was very confident in handling them safely.

Dec 8, 2016 - got my training completion certificate and emailed it to the CCW office

Jan 3, 2016 - received "Finalization Appointment" email from CCW office, with an interview date

Jan 12, 2016 - Went to CCW office, they somehow forgot about me, even though I checked in, and was told to wait. I waited an hour and watched people who came in after me come and go in about 15 minutes. The interview was not really an interview, it was an admin process, to handover a cheque for the fee of $103, show the original training certificate, sign a few documents, verify the info on the car is correct, collect your card. Total time ~10 minutes

                              Lessons learned:

                              1. Be patient, the process takes a lot of time
                              2. CCW office people are very friendly, but not so proficient (they forgot me, don't answer all questions in emails, I later found a mistake on my card, and have to get a new one)
                              3. CCW Training - If you are comfortable with handguns, and short on time, Advanced Public Instruction is the way to go, otherwise if you really want to learn more about self defense and scenarios in a classroom setting, then try some other place. I learned a ton more from youtube videos.
                              4. Take your parking ticket with you to the CCW office to get validated.
                              5. Livescan when you first are even thinking about getting a CCW.

                                Hi CohibaSyle

Thanks for the helpful post on your steps in getting your CCW in Orange County.

I plan on getting my Live Scan first while I wait for my initial interview date (August 2017).

                                I have some questions:
                                1. When you perform the Live Scan where do you tell them to route the results?
-Can you just tell them to route the results to you?
-Or do you need to tell them to route it to OCSD?
-If you do have to tell them to route results to OCSD how will OCSD know to save it in my file if a file has yet to be form/started? (initial interview date has not occurred)

                                2. I also plan to take my CCW training class before my interview.
-Is there an expiration date on when the CCW training class is passed/completed for it to be valid by the time you have your initial interview?

By the way I dont mind taking a chance and paying for all of these cost up front to help cut down on my wait time.

                                thanks
