Their standard operating procedure at this point seems to be opening the renewal application window starting 140 days before expiry. Let the reader understand...

    Mine expired yesterday the 4th.

Those that recently renewed, do you sit and wait till they call or did you give them a call?

9/5 - Renewal submitted with training cert uploaded
11/26 - Received an email stating application assigned to a person for processing and to verify everything was uploaded correctly in advance.
12/4 - Received an email asking to correct a certificate error regarding the caliber of one of my firearms not matching what was DROSed. I emailed back an explanation of the SSE DROSed firearm.
12/4 - They called me up within hours explaining for DOJ audit purposes, they can no longer allow the DROSed gun to have a different caliber than the training certificate, so my best/quickest option was to drop the gun from the list (had 5 on there anyway)
Within hours my application was approved

I don't know if anyone else has run into this yet in Orange County, but I had to remove a Gen 1 off-roster Shield that I bought back in the Single Shot exemption (SSE) days in 2014 and added to my permit back in 2021 because if OCSD is audited by the DOJ, it might not look good. I can't fault my issuing agency. They have been and continue to be a great bunch of people to deal with. I have better guns on my permit including a Shield Plus but I like options. I'll probably send in the form to correct it with DOJ and try again with it down the line when it's convenient.

Kudos to OCSD CCW team. Especially Melissa and Naomi. I was unable to file a renewal app due to serious medical issues, but they got my application processed and 10 days before my permits expiration its reneal was approved. This after I gave the Department some serious athings to think about when I filed suit challenging the pr-SB2 CCW laws.

I did my renewal there this year as FAST OC is no longer…

They basically converted a shipping container into a 2 lane range. Does what it needs to do for CCW qualification.

Chewy65 you're a retired attorney, no? One of the owners at Artemis (who does part of the renewal class) is an attorney. I don't know you so whether that would create a good synergy or, uh... destructive interference (physics sense), I couldn't tell you. They used to do the live fire portion at Prado Tiro but it looks like they are now using their indoor range. So both parts of the class would be at their facility down in Lake Forest.

Am I correct in that renewals don't require a live scan or psych exam? As my CCW expires late next month, I imagine I won't have a valid permit for a few weeks. Yes?

Can anyone recommend a less expensive place in the south county to get a training certificate? Thanks.
Come to Central or North County.

I did it about 6 months ago, I think it took 2 months ish? The amendment to add a gun took me 2 and half months.

Looking ahead, I was wondering, with the new system is OCSD still recommending renewal applications be filed 120 days before expiry? After some searching and checking it looks like they are now recommending renewal applications be filed 140 days prior to expiry.

You can verify it for yourself if you like... log into their CCW Pro portal, and "view application." In the upper right corner it should display "You can begin your renewal in X days."

Do the math, it will be 140 days prior to expiry. PSA...

Apologies. I was concerned about the outrageous psych eveluation fees that are authorized, but tthose only seem to apply to initial applcants; not to renewals unless there is a strong reason for requesting one. The other fees are nothing.
yeah no psych needed for renewal. Just need to do the training, which is longer now.
