I've got a new question for those who've gotten an initial CCW from OCSO recently: How many days off from work has it required? How many hours/days did you spend on training? Weekends or weekdays or weekday nights? How many times have you had to go to the sheriff's dept (drop off application? interview? pick up permit? other?)? Did you have to do those during "business hours" or can any of them be done after normal work hours? on the weekends?

Is any of that now doable online? (FWIW by the sound of it, Monterey, Placer and Sacto SOs now have you fill out an online application. See: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1281620) Has anyone heard if OCSO is considering switching to online apps?

I did my training on a weekend and was only at the department 2 times. Once for the interview and once to pick up. I work nights, so I didn't have to take time off of work. I believe they only operate during normal business hours. Honestly the most time I spent there was less than 1 hour. My interview only lasted 20 minutes and I was on and out in 30. Then I was only there for maybe another 20 minutes tops to pick up. The only thing that is online is the initial interview request and submitting paper work through email if needed.

I've only had to take a couple hours off of work for the initial appointment. All my training was done on the weekend (1 day CCW with Hansen Firearms Training). I'll have to take another couple hours off for the pick up appointment when that comes in. Other than that, the application is downloadable and can be completed at home. And just as Kriller stated, most of the supporting documents can be worked through email with your IA.

Someone w/a contact in the OC sheriff's CCW dept should pass along:

Sacramento, San Bernardino, Fresno, Placer, and Monterey county SOs have now all gone online w/their CCW apps: initial and renewals. For Sac, this means only 1 apt for new apps and NO apts for renewals! Saves both sides time, expenses and effort.

              12/8/16 - Training + Livescan completed
              12/12/16 - interview appointment requested
              12/13/16 - interview scheduled for 7/27/17
I have everything ready HOWEVER - ONE QUESTION! How many were issued a CCW in 2016 WITHOUT providing a "good moral character" reference letter? My circle of people is not very large at this time and I think I can get one but want to see if anyone has received their CCW in 2016 without providing "good moral character" letter?

I didn't have any such letter you're taking about. I hope your trainer is a nice person and will reissue a new cert, because your cert is only good for 6 months. Maybe you'll get bumped up for your interview.

                  9 Months?

I put in my Initial Request for Interview yesterday. I just got a reply this morning (which I took as a good sign that they were working quickly) stating that my appointment isn't until August. Is this the normal time frame?

When disclosing criminal history. would I need to write on the application only misdemeanors and felonies?
Or would an infraction need to be stated such as drinking in public which I had to pay a fine for back in "08?

I am asking in this thread because my application will be submitted to orange county.

It's good practice to disclose everything. They know everything that has a paper trail. I forgot to disclose an auto accident and my investigator asked about it with a specific date.

If there are enough cancellations sometimes you can get a moved up initial.
Mine did, originally from Nov to May, then I reset it for a year for various reasons including the Peruta case. All worked out in the end.

Thank you for the info. That gives me some hope lol. Should I have everything done before the interview? Should I pay all fees, get the fingerprints started, take the ccw course now, so everything is done when the appointment comes up, or do we have to wait until after? When are we supposed to submit the application?

I'd start the livescan, but hold off on training. You don't pay the sheriff's fee until you pick up. Training doesn't take long and the certificate is only good for 6 months.

I submitted my complete application at the initial interview. The majority of that interview was going over each section of the application. They verify everything, ask questions, look over your GCS. You don't pay your fee of $104-whatever 'till it's all done and they issue - you pick up your card.

After going over my app they said get livescan - it's all electronic except for the fingerprinting part - any licensed livescan agency can do this - mine was at a postal shop for $25 - they had the latest and greatest scan equipment, it was very easy. And they collect the $90 or whatever it is for the DOJ and FBI background check that is done with your fingerprinting. Everything is then sent to OCSD digitally.

For an initial app most will wait for the background check to be approved, and the file sent to LT for approval - they then notify you that you are 'conditionally approved' pending your training cert - which you can do in a week in most cases - my son in law's program is all online except for the range portion. It's very convenient. They or you can submit your certification to OCSD and then they contact you for a pickup date - and will usually ask for the original training certification as final proof of training.

It's super easy. It just takes a lot of time waiting for CA DOJ to do their thing - they are stupid-slow, bordering on ridiculous (or well past depending on how you want to look at it).

You pay for your training when you take it. And you need ammo - at least 75 rounds for each firearm you are putting on your permit.

And most buy a CCW pistol - and that's why it ends up being a grand or so for most applicants. I bought two firearms for my permit. They were bought purposely for carry. They are also what I practice the most with - both are very fun to shoot. You want to stay proficient, so at least monthly practice, just like a LEO.

And plan to get carry insurance as well - another hundred or two a year depending on what you think covers you well enough. God help us if we have to shoot somebody.

I would do live scan two months before your appointment then take your training as well. That way you can hand them the cert and notify them you started your live scan so they can keep an eye out for it. It take about 3-5 months roughly for the live scan results to get back to them.
