I'm with you there. I think all the counties I follow could do a much better job of defining and publishing their standards and clarifying the process. For instance, do they care about positive proofs of GMC like charity work, etc.? If so, tell us so clearly, and explain what they want. If not, tell us that. I don't know what the legitimate counter-argument would be.

I think the psych interviews are a bad idea. Adding another subjective, non-transparent part to the process is a step backward and subject to all kinds of shenanigans. Also, who would do he interviews? How many psychologists are currently on LASO's approved list for deputies? How much longer will the process get delayed when those few get deluged with an additional thousand applicants per month? It's just one more bottleneck. Also consider what happens to those who fail for whatever subjective reason. What keeps the next sheriff on his own, or the current BOS passing a law to the effect that now that they have "proof" you are "not safe with a gun", instant Red Flag gun confiscations for all. Do not underestimate the power of these exams to be used for nefarious purposes.

A few Monterey Co folk told me about the Psych Eval. years ago. IIRC it’s like 4 T/F or multiple choice Q standardized objective exams over 2-3 hours. Can’t recall if there’s a brief discussion/interview afterwards. It’s not a one on one counseling session with you laying on a couch, bawling your head off about how you hate your father/mother….

Like I said, it’s a great way to make SD/PP = GC acceptable to the public and media and can be quietly dropped as a requirement after a few years when the sheriff and public are comfortable readily issuing.

Well, we have disagreed before and you turned out to be right, so there is that, but I don’t think “the media” will ever be convinced by any actual evidence which is why every jurisdiction I am aware of that has made bold steps to increase carry had the media screaming about “wild west” and “blood in the streets” despite the fact that every previous occasion has proved that idea wrong. I think the idea of testing just opens the door to biased tests that perfectly reasonable people will be declared to fail, and every failure will be used as evidence both against that person, and as evidence that in general there are too many unsuitable untested people getting permits in the state and EVERY Sheriff will be required to test. What do you imagine the test will look like in San Francisco?…

Regarding the bolded: just a few months ago the LATimes interviewed AV and asked him why he wants to issue more CCWs, especially since LA county is liberal. He’s said because he’s watching what liberals are doing and what they are doing is buying guns! The interviewer then writes what AV said is true and then moves on. 3 years ago I would have agreed with you, but since then there’s been a non stop massive purchase of guns primarily by non gun owners (i.e., newbies), non whites and women due to BLM and related civil protests and pandemic fears. Plus even before that I’ve noticed over the past decade more and more people and reporters have heard about carry permits and have slowly been desensitized to them, no longer fear them. (Last week in OH legislative committee Moms Demand Action said they’re for CCWs, just not Constitutional Carry w/o training and permit.)

Last, I suggested that for LASD which is pro CCW to give them a way to go all the way to Dark Green. I would not suggest it for SF. I need not suggest it for Alameda Co SO since Sheriff Ahern (RINO), already requires it for all applicants.

I am one of those newbies - prior to 2020 mess I would have never considered getting a firearm, but now I have 2 handguns and a shotgun. If it wasn't for the stupid laws about AW/etc I would have also had KR-103

After reading the article there is no doubt the writer has contempt for AV. I'm sure if he had his way he would have badgered AV about every issue.
