Why, thank you, Mr. Splithoof. That is indeed a compliment, and as you can attest it does see off-highway travel.

It does get cleaned up from time to time but right now it's covered in santa ana-blown dust and springtime pollen, all mixed together with coastal dewfall into a nice surface crust.



I do clean the glass before I drive it (professional habit), just about every time I drive it, though.

I have a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun, Marlin 336, Henry H001 (to gift to my son when he is of age) and not a lever, but a Henry pump action .22 that my dad gifted to me.

If it helps with my application, I proposed to my wife inside the Lava Tubes in Mojave. Need to get back out there again.

Nabbed myself a .22 Henry, happy to finally have a lever in the arsenal. Funny enough it wasn’t an expected purchase. I had just bought a Ruger Wrangler and Maverick 12g and thought I was done buying for a while. But my pal had been hunting a Golden Boy all pandemic and got dang tired of em being sold out everywhere so he bought a standard model. And wouldn’t you know it? Bass Pro got one in the next day. So being the good friend that I am I bought his standard model. Now I have .22LR cowboy set up, a single action six shooter and a lever rifle.

Always wanted some lever guns, just quit work to go back to school though so the rest of my want list will have to wait a few years. I want (in order):
A 45-70
A 44 mag
A .357 mag
And a 30-30 because that was my dad’s favorite caliber. I think all the 30-30 carbines in the revolutionary war left a mighty big impression on the Mexican people.

Matching revolvers in 44 mag and .357 will of course be required

Anywho, hope I can trek out there to shoot with y’all one day. Ain’t that far from my home in the SGV.

Lately I've been shooting my .22 Marlin and love it. Glad to have maintained a stash of .22 rimfire over the years. Now I might use it all up! Hahaha...

Say, you might be a little more specific about *which* revolutionary war... granted, there were no metallic cartridges in the Colonies in 1776... so we're going to assume you mention the Mexican Revolution occuring over 11 or 12 years starting 1910; this pushed a lot of Mexican folks to seek peace and stability in the U.S. during those years.

The .30 Winchester Center Fire/.30WCF/.30-30 [Marlin's designation, btw] was the first centerfire rifle cartridge to use the then-new *smokeless* powder. The .30-30 then went on to claim, to this day, the reputation for being the cartridge that has put more venison onto the American dinner table than any other cartridge in history.

Guess that would be in addition to the impression it made upon the Mexican people who used it in their Revolution.

Nailed it, that's the one. My understanding is that the revolutionaries were armed with a hodgepodge of weapons, whatever they could get their hands on really. But the rifles chambered in 30-30 were favorites because they were effective and ammo was easily obtained across the border from the Americans.

My dad was from rural Mexico, as a kid he worked for one of the local landowners herding their goats up and down the mountain side. He'd hunt rabbits and other small critters for that evenings meal at home. Loved being here in the states and collecting firearms. Sadly he passed away from heart troubles in 2015, but I still take out the Mauser he gave me to toss some 8mm lead downrange for him.

It's really good! The lyrics include a diss on a federal general who "never had fear", I love it. These old folk songs were a great way to spread the word that some guy stinks haha.

The only real detraction I hear about the Model 88 is the trigger. I loved it when it and the Model 100 came out in my youth, as well as the look-alike Sako Finnwolf! I never had the opportunity to shoot any of them, however.

There were a few smokeless cartridges before the .30-30 - they were primarily military rounds like the 8mm Lebel from 1888. We had the .30-40 Krag or .30 US, adopted in 1892.

Chris - yes, you could say that as well it was the first commercially made smokeless rifle in the US, I believe.
