The ammo was 300gn RNFP from LAX.

Which load, specifically? Was it their "New Manufactured"? or a commercially-boxed load. Looking for any claimed velocities.

The trouble with that Long Ranger is it's trigger pull. Every time we want to sight it in, we need to rent a bulldozer to aid with the trigger pull.

Try a cheap bore sighter that fits in the muzzle. They aren't perfect, but they should get you closer and help determine if there's an a problem with the rifle/sights.

I'd love to say it's the scope, the iron sights, the shooter or the ammo but we've slowly ruled those things out. It's like basketball size groups at 50 yards. Plus the trigger pull is out of spec.

I think it's a bad barrel. We've shot the gun using some very good bench rests and its still all over the place. The pull is 8-9# and Henry claims they should be between 4-8# .

I'm more accurate throwing the gun and hitting the target over putting a bullet through it and hitting the target.

Gonna have to send it back to Henry

It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

I assumed shooting 45-70 much out to 200 would be like lobbing artillery, but I didn’t think the factory sights would max out at 100 yards.

300 grains @ 1800+ should shoot pretty damn flat through 100 yards, I can tell you that much.

The mild, "For Use In All Rifles"/1330fps 405 grain semi-jacketed lead flat point Remington CoreLokt leaves my 18.5" Marlin 1895 @ 1050 fps (recorded with a Labradar) and shoots just fine with little to no holdover to bang 100 yard steel all day long. My Marlin's rear semibuckhorn sight is positioned to roughly 35-40% of it's max elevation.

The artillery arc you're thinking of is with a similar, heavy (400 gr +) bullet weight, simliar, leisurely speeds but to 300 yards. That's where you will start to lob little lead pumpkins from the .45-70... and it's a hoot!

I wish Kendog would come along some time and give his two cents' worth on your gun's issues...

Kerplow, are you able to handload for your .45-70? And your correct, those Henry irons could be suspect.
golfish' LR is still a work in progress. That trigger just doesn't seem right.

My Winchester 92 had to go back after the first range trip. We're able to tighten up the screws any and stop the rattle?

I'm not a fan of LAX ammo. I don't know what to tell you other then that sux. Another box of ammo is a must. I wish I could help you out with that.

That's good to hear. I'm hoping your second range trip will be much better.

Before you send it back, try a 405 grain bullet at 1400 or less. It WILL shoot higher. A lot.
Henry should take care of the trigger and loose stuff.

I'd look into using the FTX bullet in a regular case. There's a reason their shorter. Be cautious there. I don't think that is a good idea.

My understanding is the only issue is COAL and cycling through actions.
