Its not an easy question to answer and many keep their specific Good Cause private. I can say that it's obvious a CCW at its root is always for self defense but you will have to provide reasons and justification that are specific to you and your life. So yes, its for self defense but why do you need to specifically carry to defend yourself? Money, geographics, protecting valuable property, etc.
Spend some time reading this thread and others and you may pick up on some ideas that resonate with your specific situation.
Keep in mind that simple statements based on '2nd Amendment Rights' will not get you anywhere and self-defense without substance won't either. Spend some time on the Sheriff's CCW site, read through the paperwork, applications, etc. and you'll see that self defense alone won't cut it.
Also, start typing up justification and support. Use it as a draft, go back and read it a week later, does it still make sense or does it need more? Does it seem vague or are you stretching for reasons? Also keep in mind depending on what you say they may ask for supporting documentation (ie: bank statements for large cash deposits, rental contracts, etc.) to make sure you're not just making stuff up in order to get a permit.
As others have said and I can attest to, the Deputies at Riverside County as well as the Safety Class and Range are all pro-carry. They want everyone to have a permit but you have to play by the laws and rules in place. They are there to help but that might only come upon your interview and review of paperwork simply due to there being more applications/renewals and not enough time for them to play Q&A for everyone.
It really is a good experience and you just have to be able to justify why you have a need to carry.
It just takes some serious thought and of course a lot of time to get through the whole process.
