I had a defensive shooting almost 15 years ago when I was rather young (barely an adult) and faced serious felony charges in the incident and was arrested on that account. By the time we finally got to the cusp of going to trial, being someone with no assets or wealth, and exhausting the help others could provide and my ability to borrow, I was not going to be able to afford my attorney through a trial, and having seen the public defenders in action at various hearings, I felt like I would have been putting myself at risk to use one, so I took a plea deal. From some hardcore felonies I was able to get a deal for disturbing the peace (public fighting), a misdemeanor, punishable via community service. We even negotiated to have firearms prohibitions removed from probation conditions as part of the deal. My attorney said that based on that offer that they clearly knew they didn't have much of a case, but I couldn't afford to take a chance or go through the process.

However, after the deal was done the prosecutor went back to the court and got a restraining order filed against me and they came and took my guns. They claimed two were assault weapons and filed felony charges accordingly. One was an SKS with the standard fixed mag and the other was a FAL with a bullet button (not coincidentally, I found the bullet button to that rifle some time later under the sofa next to where they were taking photos of the guns before packing them up and taking them away when I moved it to steam clean the carpets; f'in' POSs; they also pocketed some of my dad's things, like his surefire light). They also threw in a hi cap mag charge which was thrown out right away due to the offense not even being in the contemporary PC. These were negotiated to misdemeanor AW charges with more community service.

After completion of community service and probation without further incident, all charges were dismissed pursuant to 1203.4. The dismissals were almost a decade ago and the actual convictions are over a decade old.

I have not gotten so much as a ticket in CA since, and only a fix-it ticket outside of CA. I have also been able to DROS firearms, although there are always delays and problems (including going undetermined).
Wow, yeah, that's definitely a different story. No idea how that'd be handled, not sure if anyone else here could chime in if they were in similar situations. Devil may be in the detail here. But, based on what I'm seeing, sounds like you were illegally carrying a firearm when this happened and that alone I would think could be a big issue. But who knows, it was also a long time ago.

You'd probably just need to apply and find out what they say. It looks like current application cost is only $43 so that's really all you're putting at risk. Although they are currently recommending you do the Livescan early in the process it is not mandatory. So, you could do the application, pay the $43 and wait until you hear back. If you're denied then you're only out $43. If you're moved to the next step then you can do your Livescan in hopes you pass the next step.

A year or two ago I would have thought something like you're explaining would 100% be an automatic decline. But, I also thought much more minor infractions would have also been automatic deline - figuring they're trying to limit the number they issue.

Defensive shooting was in the driveway of my parents' home. No issues or charges related to carrying.

I had also thought a lot more was at stake financially during the process up to that point. Maybe it's worth a shot after all, although I'd prefer not to waste $43 if it's significantly more likely than not that I'd get denied.

Aw man! The day I sleep in I receive a call for pick up. They left me a voicemail saying they will call back the next scheduling. Interestingly the call came from a 213 number. Was not expecting them to call on a holiday.

          My timeline:

March 27, 2022 - Mailed in my application. Mailed an untraceable money order so not sure when my application was entered into the system.
          March 8, 2023 - Call for interview
          March 21, 2023 - Interview
          June 9, 2023 - Proceed to training
Sept 4, 2023 - Missed call for pick up.

LASD will honor your renewal. Make sure you submit the renewal app in a timely manner

Is there a general consensus on how many months ahead of time "submit the renewal app in a timely manner" is with regards to renewal ?

Most of the threads on calguns indicate +-3 days from expiration. My personal experience was I lapsed for 3 days. I mailed my app and LASD received it exactly 90days from expiration and I still lapsed for 3 days. I believe the lapse occurred due to a holiday weekend.

This was prior to LASD moving to permitium.

The consensus is that LASD prioritizes renewals vs new applications

90 Days or less before expiration for LASD. Do it on their website.

On June 23rd, 2022 I mailed my application to the LASD.

I have no idea when my money order was cashed, but I finally received a call (voice mail) from a deputy on Aug 30 regarding my application. 14 months and one week later.

Today I returned their call and spoke with the deputy.

Unfortunately, I no longer qualify as I have moved to Texas....
