Noticed that no one uses buttstock covers with ammo holders. Why is that? Is that frowned upon within the community? Newbie move/mistake?

I have a buttstock cover on one of my 1892 clones. Leather, and holds extra ammo. Nothing wrong with that at all.
If I ever had the fortune to aquire a historic rifle (American Indian owned) that had such a cover or other adornments, I would most certainly keep it as is. Something like that would go nicely with my small collection of Navajo blankets that were made for my great grandparents.

Nice looking rifle you have there. With a revolver to go along with it, you have made a solid choice.

Good deal ya'll like that for sure. No problem for the leather either. I like good leather work! To me leather looks better than some of those more modern shell holders that are up front.

Yes, nothing wrong with some good leather accoutrements. Personally, I like my hardware lean and mean, and simple. I'd rather wear my extra ammo on my belt in one form or another.

One of these days I'm gonna sketch up a plan for a multi-ammo-loop belt (.357, .41, .44 and .45-70). I know just the guy to make it, too. Lives up in Tehachapi and always posts good pictures...

I made a pattern for a Western-style Mexican loop 1911 holster for Wild Bunch. I think the technical name is Buscadero style. Thinking of that same leather artist.

Would love to design a holster that also worked for the Ruger Vaquero. Probably a bridge too far. lol

Dave, just got your email. My son Ian was a swamper two years ago for that same Kern County Fire 'dozer crew. I betcha he could identify the operators. He wanted to go back for the following season but he was up in the Rockies operating a mobile crane rig for various custom home builders in the region.

My BIL is up there as I type this; fire moving towards Bakersfield. If the creek road is impacted, it will be a total entrapment zone. It's his turn to cover fire protection up there this season; I'm on the mend, so won't be moving much hose.

Yeah we hit it pretty hard, five cowboys with shovels, up in the smoke and the dark. We won in a couple places and got our butts kicked in a couple places but we did stop it at a road, so helped prevent the fire coming back around behind the ranch house and also into the majority of their pasture. We evacuated my sons horses (5), and the Wolf Pack (his 10 cowdogs) up to our place in Tehachapi, that night just in case. The fire guys pretty much got it under control that night but it was looking grim for a while.

Bouncing in and out of ranch trucks that afternoon and evening. Here's what I saw: One Winchester 94. Very old, from the state of the wood and the greying of the blueing. A .17 bolt action, used and abused like a good ranch rifle should be and a very nice .223 bolt action with a bull bbl. A couple indiscriminate revolvers too with snake shot.

Tell me about my 1894.

It’s older, I think 1918 manufacturing date. It’s stamped WCF, so it’s at least pre marlin 30.30. The action runs smooth and is tight. Is it safe to shoot assuming the chamber is in spec?


I have dies, brass and 3031 or 4831 to chose from. The only bullets I have are spritzer so I can single load or find projectiles.


The stock is the most beautiful walnut but the forgaurd Is rather plane.
There is no I engraving so I think the stock was a later upgrade.

So lots of people in the MLC. I talked to Apples last week, I think he mentioned 45 memebers from CG. I know some guys are pretty far from the Mojave. For obvious reasons there is no way we could post up a day for a shoot.

What I'd like to see is pictures of members standing by a Joshua tree with their lever guns (please don't shoot the trees) that's 4 states with Joshua trees..
