Go look ad the advertising rates and then count how many different advertisers you see and that will sorta show you the monthly income.
Then you have the contributors.
There are costs associated with hosting of course, but there can be a tidy profit margin if a forum with this number of active users and advertisers is managed well.

Especially if you can get folks to moderate for free.

Ad revenue is based on traffic, paid subscribers or not. If traffic is diminished, so is the ability to generate ad revenue. This ongoing, pervasive issue has got to be hitting the bottom line, and it is a puzzlement to me that it has been allowed to go on for so long. Something is seriously amiss here.

You are absolutely right, and my apologies for contributing to the unintentional thread drift. Allow me to help steer it back where it belongs

So - a Winchester 94 carbine that I picked off a local consignment rack for so cheap I'm embarrassed to say. Made in 1907 and sporting a Lyman 21 (Climbin' Lyman) rear sight. Had some issues to sort, but they are all being taken care of. If character and patina were gold, this would be the mother lode!

I have been looking for a shooter non-Model 94 .30-30 halfheartedly for a while, and I found a 1950 Marlin 336 for cheap that needs some work. It has a Browning buttplate (?) and the stock needs some work. The bluing has become grey patina, which doesn't bother me too much. Like the 1917 Colt I bought before, it has a slight ring in the barrel, about an inch from the muzzle. I will shoot it to see how it does, and if needed, get a new barrel or even check into getting the existing one cut back a bit - maybe make it a Marauder....though that entails shortening the mag tube as well. The current barrel is pre-Microgroove. It is still in the waiting period so no pics.

I have refiinished stocks before, know how to steam out dents, etc. I have formed cork sanding blocks. I will enjoy that part.

BBM, that looks about the same condition, character, and patina as the old 25-35 I picked up a little while back. Love the rifle, wish I would have bought more than 200 rounds for it. Yea, I've got all the reloading gear for it too but that's not enough brass to last forever!

I appreciate the 25-20 photo earlier too. I have come to love that little round and, again, wish I woulda bought a lot more ammo when I found some.

If one looks at the current state of lever rifle choices offered by the various manufacturers, there are some nice models that have features and quality that were not available in the recent past. That is good news. So far from what I have seen, the RuMar line looks to be well done for the price. Those Trappers are begging for a stint up in the Hi Sierras in a saddle scabbard, or in a rack in an ATV.

^^^A good, well made scabbard is basically a gun holster for a large animal, or for those without said animals it can be used for ATVs, motorcycles, boats, etc. From the equine aspect, I usually kept my scabbard in a vertical position close to the right front of my Crates saddle. That allowed me to dismount and smoothly draw the carbine from the scabbard in one smooth motion, much like a draw stroke with a holstered sidearm. If done properly, the muzzle does not cover the animal. This of course requires practice, of which I started out with a BB gun.

I was always more of an under the right leg, muzzle forward kinda guy. I like the rifle to ride a lil butt high but not so high that mounting or dismounting was difficult. Same deal, as I swung down I could draw the rifle from the scabbard and never cover the horse. I"m also tall enough I can reach over my horse and pull the rifle out if I had time and wasn't in a hurry. I've heard of guys using the saddle as a rest but have never tried it even though I've had several horses broke to gunfire. Anyhoo, I never used the upfront position as I wanted that saddle horn area clear. I would always carry a rope and would rope firewood and drag it into camp with my horse and then the rifle up front would be in the way. I also would lead pack horses often when I was carrying a rifle and same deal wanted that horn area clear. I often thought, too, of building an old time set of pommel bags with holsters. Think saddlebags that go over the horn. Old time California pommel bags always had a holster under one flap and sometimes on the other side too. Ya know I've been thinking of building a pair of those for myself for about 25 years now and never have. I even have a good pattern and I've built one set for a friend in AR. Never have gotten around to building my own though. All of these were reasons though why I wanted to keep the horn area clear and so carried under my right leg.

I do build a lot of scabbards for lever guns and would be proud to build one for anyone in the MLC! I could even tool that MLC brand on it. Fact finishing off a scabbard today for a guy in KY. Want to get er done before the game.

I've often thought might be a fun lil project if two or three guys from the MLC wanted to go in on a side of leather, (ya can always get three scabbards from a side and sometimes four or even five). They could come up here for the day, Chris knows the way, and I could teach em to build their own scabbard. Show em how to do the tooling if any and then sew em up for ya. Heck, if a guy was feeling froggy I could start the sewing and even have them do a lot of that part. We could get em done in a day. Be a fun day.

Something interesting happened in my scabbard world right before Christmas. Had a couple of Texicans contact me and ask if I could build em a scabbard but with handles instead of saddle straps. So I did, turns out it was pretty easy. These guys carry their levers in the truck and so didn't need the straps. Lot of guys will put em between the seats in the scabbard so they can still get out if needed unlike a guncase, yet the scabbard protects the rifle.







We was talking about the new levers out there. I made six other scabbards right before Christmas, five of which were presents. One for a short 16" Henry with a big loop and five for the newer 18" guns. Not a single 20 or 24 incher. most had large loops too.

The calguns website has suffered from abnormal function and extremely slow page loads for at least six months if not longer... they made a server change and the new server(s) OS do not play well w/ this older version of vBulletin forum software... or so the story goes. There are wholesale forum software changes rumored, so, hang on to yer hats for the near future.

Meanwhile... I've some family troubles to attend to over the coming weeks and perhaps well into springtime which will necessitate upstate road travel back and forth... wish me luck in dealing with it, and one day at a time.

I do want to get out to the desert for a day of plinkin', too, in between travels. I'm trying to get what's left to do on the trailer done so I can drag that around, too. When it rains, it pours...
