If you had said something when you were out his way, I could probably have helped you some.Comment

Almost forgot; that Browning .22 semi-auto Mark had out in the desert was not only super eye catching, but, accurate as the dickens! And let's not forget that '92 he had done. Classic lever gun Mark has with that one. Damn superb.
Apples and golfish are upping the game here. Well done my friends!!

No he's relatively new. Say Howdy to Spud:Dang. Get done hackin' soon (get well soon).
I see your nifty lil' 9mm, there, and then the MIGHTY TEN! Yessir. And I gotta add that your horse you're sittin' is one of the most beautiful animals I think I've ever seen; that last photograph, there. Could just be the light, the partial cloud cover and whatever, but I'm almost stunned. Have you told us about that one?

Here Nichole had borrowed him to sort on back in July:

So you'll remember Lil Sis my other horse, here with Nichole borrowing her again:

Nichole was borrowing my horse for a while because she had a young filly coming up that wasn't ready/old enough to jump into the work and her seasoned mare had a foal at her side so she was out of the pic too. In fact this last works was the first time she'd been able to use her own horses in almost 2 years. Anyhoo:

So a couple of years ago I'd of told ya that the horse didn't live that could turn faster than I can ride......well I found her. Now I'm not talking about bucking, no bucking involved, she would spook at something and spin around so fast to the left that I'd come off. She'd had me off twice and the third time I was pretty stoved up. See the peak behind the one in front behind the flag?

Where it comes down to the ridge behind the corrals? Well back in Jan, Smoke and I were on the other side of that peak gathering cattle. A bull, up above us by about 15 yds or so, lifted his head to look down on us and see what we were doing. I didn't take it as a threatening gesture but Lil Sis did. She spun around about 270 degrees. I made it 180 before I was slingshotted off and into space. Smoke said I did a complete somersault and smacked my head, on landing flattish on my back. Neither of these do I remember. She came running over doing all her ER stuff. I actually wasn't in any pain but didn't have any air. After a few, I rolled over to my hands and knees and tired to get up that wasn't gonna work, found the pain. Smoke thought I might of broke a hip, hell the old guy though he might of broke a hip but wasn't gonna walk out of there. So crawled over to Lil Sis, crawled up the saddle and headed back to camp 4 miles according to Smoke's watch. She changed her diagnosis then to deep bone brusing. Interestingly, going downhill was relatively comfortable, climbing uphill was excruciating. We tried pushing the bull back but he was pissed now and I didn't feel like discussing it with him. Ya can always tell when a bull is pissed because he starts walking through trees not around trees. This guy literally walked into a grove of young trees and started walking through them. So that was a clue to leave him behind. On our way back we found a group of about 30 cattle and so did bring them in. Well, all the xrays were clear and nothing was broke, the Dr agreed with Smoke.
Nichole felt maybe it was time I didn't ride some of these younger horses anymore. So my son Logan (cowboys in NV), and I traded horses straight across. We met In Alamo Nv, 5 hours for us and 5 hours for them. Had lunch and made the swap. This was back in Feb. Even with his literal 1.2 million acres to cover and thousands and thousands of cattle to work it wasn't till last month that Lil Sis turned a corner and quit being so opinionated.
Ol Spud? He's just working out perfect for me. Almost as light a foot as Lil Sis, stupid tough, mountain climbing son of a gun, yet quite enough to be good in the corrals too. The couple of horses I need rolled up into one. Ya wanna see a good looking one. Hatari is all growed up now:

No horses here, just the Jeep Wrangler. I took my friend out to the Mohave east of Lake Los Angeles to the SB county border. Easy to spot because that's where all the pot farms are. Most were already raided and empty now.
Weather was very good this weekend, clear, no wind.
He got his AR's dialed in at 100 yards. I finally got my Henry 357 dialed in at 100 yards. I have a Vortex 2x7 scope on it but it's a little fuzzy at 100 yards.
My AR-22 has a Leoplold 3x9 that is clear as a bell. I'm thinking of swapping those scopes. It's the 33 mm model, pretty light and small. I don't shoot the AR much, the Henry Golden Boy is far more accurate and fun.
I also went out there a couple of times last spring but that is wind season, very tough to shoot in. That was before the huge pot farm raids, those greenhouses were everywhere out there.Comment

Was getting ready for our MLC shoot and plum forgot to make mention of these. Mighty fine desert guns you have there. Gotta love those 39's!Well went outside shooting for the first time this season. Tried something new on two lever guns. Skinner Peep Sights, Marlin 39A, and Marlin 1894 Cowboy LTD 38/357.

Really pleased with the 1894.First three rounds, shot a string @ 50 yds. Directly above the bull, .5 wide x 3 inch tall. no adjustment to the sight. The 39 @ 25 yds, I had to raise the peep 3.5 turns, and adjust the windage. But I was then hitting the bull.

Horses and lever guns go together like smoke n' fire, meat n' potatoes, hearth n' home... like lightnin' n' thunder, hammer n' nails and bacon n' eggs...
It's just that many of we 21st Century city slickers no longer ride, if we ever did. Doesn't mean we don't want to see 'em! and the culture that endures from the time of the western frontier. Without the work of men, women and horses the West would've never been conquered.
HW Dave, glad to hear you didn't break anything and that you found a solution to having to ride Twister! Thanks as always for the great photos and descriptions.
Howdy, Spud!
Jimi, your report is a welcome thing to hear!
And to SDDAVE, thanks for posting your recent pictures. You said elsewhere that your favorite place in the whole world to be is in the desert, with your rifle. Amen to that, brother. Amen.
Glad to know all y'alls.

Speaking of horses, my squaw & I just rolled in from another great trip to Arizona, this time up around Show Low, Eager, Springerville, etc. Observed a few herds of wild horses on the Apache reservation; that was fun to see, although the Indians who have to deal with those have a much different outlook on the subject than a lot of folks who are from cities.
Found a few neat old Winchester rifles for sale up that way, but nothing in particular that I wanted. Those are out there, y’all just have to be in the right place and time.Comment

Hey guys, Bob (BOBGBA) asked me to post some info and pics of my Winchester 92. Gun is shown in a couple pictures from our last MLC outing.
So Bob, its a Miroku Winchester model 1892 short rifle in 45 long colt, probably made in late 2018. I believe I purchased it from 2AZone in early 2019 (price tag was $864.00) a nice blued gun.

I thought I could get pass the rebounding hammer and tang safety. I couldn't. I reached out to Turnbull about having the tang safety and rebounding hammer deleted, along with doing color case hardening finish on the normal parts.
Here's what I have now.

Let me know if you have any other questions....Last edited by golfish; 10-31-2022, 12:57 PM.It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Thanks guys...
Thursday was the first time that I've taken it out since getting it back from Turnbull. I think we all put 5 rounds through it and just moved on. It worked as it should, just the way a lever gun is supposed to work.
It's funny, we get out there and get to talking and forget all about shooting. I had a lot of loads I wanted to try out too..It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
