I didn't think to take any pictures, but I spent a couple hours in the excellent weather today (Snow a week ago, shorts and t-shirt today) tinkering with a gaggle of levers.

The old pre 1900 Marlin 1894 in .255 Dean, I loaded up enough rounds to shoot it at a cardboard box out the shop window and only have 2 keyholes out of ten. That's a big improvement over the last time I played with it when every round keyholed at way lower velocity. I'm hoping I just need to drive them faster, as factory 25-20 shoots great from it even though it shouldn't. I used 5.5g of Unique and an 85 grain lead bullet. Wish I could find some jacketed for it.

Shot a couple of rounds out of the Winchester 53, since that ammo box was out.

Worked on and (I think) finally fixed the not-Marlin-jam-but-still-annoying-jam problem I've been having on my old JM marked 1894c. Cycled a couple of mags through it without the problem rearing up, which means I guess I'll keep it.

Shot a mag through my stainless R92, since I had the 38 ammo out anyway.

Went over the 1894 in 44 Mag and decided that yes, I need to sell it since I've never even shot it and only have one other 44 mag (A brand new bicentennial Ruger carbine I'll likely sell also).

Cleaned up and went over the 444 Marlin and prepped about a hundred pieces of brass for it. I'll load these up for plinking, and order some copper bullets for this falls hunting seasons.

Cleaned and shot the first year 1885 Low Wall and spent some time looking for a better set of sights than the simple leaf that's on it now. It should shoot well enough it oughta have some quality sights but I don't know quite what I want yet and am open to suggestions.

Cleaned and admired, but didn't shoot, the very old 25-35 Winchester that I want to hunt with at some point in the future. I've got 195 rounds for it and need to shoot enough that I can load some with nontox...or just hunt out of state with it.

Looked at but didn't mess with the Gemmer style Spencer sporting rifle I have yet to fire...but did think about it, since I recently picked up an original 56-46 round for it a couple of weeks ago.

45-70 and 45 Colt will get messed with next time I'm tired of chainsawing down trees and working on the house.

^ ^ ^ Spyder, that sounds like a grand time. All of it.

You embody the spirit of the MLC.

And, too, does KillerBee w/ that score! of a K38 Masterpiece. Are you kidding me?

I picked up a LNIB Model 15 Combat Masterpiece at an auction a couple years ago for under $400 (pre-DROS and taxes.) It is one of my favorites to shoot - it is just so pleasant and accurate. My grandson loved shooting it, too. It is much cleaner than my Model 19.

just minding my own business monitoring my gunbroker watch list, this one's getting mighty close to closing at $425

that can't be right, 1971 S&W Combat Masterpiece in great condition, all original with box and papers?!

threw one bid down and got it for $430

DROS'd it today, my FFL was stocked, it's really sharp

and for those not familiar with the model 15, it's basically a model 10 with adjustable sights

stand by for range report in a couple of weeks

            Smith & Wesson S&W 4" 1971 Combat Masterpiece 15-3 Pinned Box .38 C&R

Nice one. I had a Mod 67 for many years. Same as yours but in stainless. Let it go to a friend, wished I hadn't. Nowadays I have its lil cousin in .22 a 1972 vintage Mod 18-3.

When I got it it had fired 5 rounds only (rings on the clyinder) and then been put away. Gummed up bad inside. Local LGS/gunsmith ran it through a sonic cleaner and then we were able to open er up and clean er out. Said to him that it looked like the previous owner had just squirted WD 40 inside 20 or 30 years ago.

I have a 15-4 as well, it was LNIB when I found it in a used gun display at our LGS in 1998. I paid $225.00 for it (box, manual, sight adjust tool, factory target hammer and trigger).

Of the 16 revolvers I own, this is the smoothest, most accurate of all of them. I believe it was made in 1980.

Hey - any of you folks planning on attending the CA state lever rifle silhouette matches up at Angeles this May? I'll be there, so if you're around stop by and say "hi".
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

This thread has become rather lengthy but to summarize:

The only requirement for membership in the MLC/Mojave Lever Crew is a desire to own and shoot lever action long guns (lever operated shotguns included).

We do not formally meet to shoot in large groups as we have not developed our own range safey procedures for such. Therefore we encourage the membership to go out and shoot, take photos then share those here in the thread. Perhaps one day we'll have a larger gathering and a camp out. Who knows. If you like we may add your username to the MLC roster, but we never assume. You have only to request it.

Hope to see you in the future!
