I'm dealing with them right now. That is correct, they don't do conversions. Any incoming guns need to be converted before reaching the shop.

Can anyone recommend someone in the greater San Diego area that will sell "permanently" blocked XDm 19 shot 9mm mags? I was talking to one shop up north via email and phone about getting a couple of blocked mags from them (they use pop rivets), but I've been having some trouble with the situation and was hoping to get another recommendation. Thanks.

I have a shooting friend who has the tools, but he's never done this before. Any advice I can give him? Like "gotchas" to not do or look out for?

EDIT: Well, nevermind. He's not comfortable doing this, and he won't be free until the 20th anyway. I'm getting my gun on the 10th from EBR. The drive up to Newbury Park is worth it... but the thing is, once I get it I am going to want to USE it. So, I will explore my options. I think I found another shop that will sell converted mags, but if I could get the ones I have done instead, that'd be ideal. Less cost for me.

2nd EDIT: Found Parallax Tactical in San Diego about three or four blocks away from where I work. They have the mags on their website, but don't say how they block them, so I'm going to check them out on Tuesday. Thought I'd mention it here if anyone else might be looking.

Just to follow up, I just got back from a lunchtime trip to Parallax Tactical in Sorrento Valley/UTC (it's a few blocks off the 805 and Miramar Road). I walked in with 3 rebuild kits and walked out about 30 mins later with 3 pop riveted blocked mags for about $20. Everything good everyone says about their customer service is right. I felt welcome immediately, even being a newbie and a woman to boot. These guys are super friendly, super knowledgeable, and just downright awesome.

AND... I saw in the case an XDm 9mm 5.25 Comp SSE for $795. Had no idea I could get one local (but that's okay, because Michael and Michelle at EBR Works have been super awesome as well). They also do consignments.

I will definitely be back. If you're in the San Diego area around that area, try them out. Can't rave about them enough.

That is the same process that I heard, although not mentioned is that the FFL can get a variance in regards to the serial number, but that takes time. The name can be stamped on the barrel.

Also realize that it depends on the firearm and the exact process which is done, as well as whether it is occasional.

The bottom line is that it might not be what many people think that it is and if you are doing the conversion, then you need to really make sure that you are following ALL the rules and regulations.

As the buyer, I should not have to worry about what process the FFL went through to be comfortable enough to DROS the SSE converted gun over to me.

What is unclear from reading that link is whether or not I as the buyer have any liability if the FFL I purchased an SSE'd gun from didn't follow every single step.

Odd considering the process that has been described in my OP has been checked by the DOJ... I'm sure Gene or someone will weigh in.
