      ccw application

on the application, do we still have to write a good cause letter on a separate
paper along with the app. i know they use to state it before but this new app. doesn't ask for it. Do they just ask you verbally ask now?

New app? Which County? The State mandates they all use the same application.

Yes, you must have a separate letter with your name on the letterhead, good cause statement and signature.
Don't let the name fool you...

No, the main instructor was named Preston. This was at the Rancho Cordova range on Sunrise & Douglas not Sac Valley which is where Wes does his I think. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I was wanting to go with Wes / Sac Valley, but a friend of mine lives right near the RC range and wanted to go there so I went with him. Anyways, from the reviews I've read on other instructors, I'll be spending the extra $ when it comes around time for the update class & renewal rather than returning to RC. The instructors at RC were friendly enough, they're good guys, but questions posed during class seemed to be answered by the class members rather than instructor after a bit of debate, and for that matter, the class mainly consisted of watching 15 year old videos by Lenny Magill. Perhaps that's the real test, if you can go through 8 hours of Lenny w/o going insane you're stable enough to carry a gun. j/k Also, I'm not sure how other classes are but on the first day we were lumped in w/ a Basic Intro to Pistols class where you get to learn (in a very remedial fashion) about the different parts / functions of a gun & the components of a round for the first few hours of the day. Stuff that I would assume anyone looking to get their CCW should already know. Again, this is just my opinion, YMMV and we did cover a good amount of relevant subject material.

Also, I did refer a few people here to Calguns.net and CalgunsFoundation.org regarding some subjects that came up, one lady in particular that was taking the class but wasn't 100% sure of the steps needed to get a license in El Dorado County, so I guess that's a plus.

I was gonna say. I don't think anyone in Wes' class would be giving the eye roll. He's a fun instructor, woth lots of experiences to share.

Day one was classroom, introductions, gun safety, a little bit of talk about when you can and can't use force and some situations. Day two, we read and dicussed the laws, then started shooting. The qualification style was great, low stress and fun. But I won't give away his secret. After that we did some shooting while retreating etc before we did our written test.

                  Overall great experience

That sounds one hell of a lot better. We got to look at holsters on the second day and the only backing up we did was during a cease fire.

Wes covers the required material and you do the qual shoot. He's going to be a bit more expensive than the security academies but his training is going to be geared specifically towards CCW and you're most likely to have a good experience with him.

                        CDSGuy,

I'm pretty sure we did some extra curricular shooting in your class. If we didn't, we must have had a bunch of people with multiple guns to qualify with.

In pretty much every class lately, we've been able to get to do a handful of fun courses of fire that incorporate drawing and firing while moving, engaging multiple targets at various angles and distances, one handed shooting and more.

For everyone who's reading this, keep in mind that this is all for fun and practical application, not for qualification. We get the quals out of the way and then move on to the more realistic courses of fire. Range day is always the best!!

Being able to have the chance to draw from the holster and moving while firing was great. The only thing that wasn't as fun is the weather we had at the end of last week. Wes did bring up a great point, no matter what the condition's are outside the bad guy is in the same boat as you and who ever trained more in poor condition's is going to have the upper hand. Plus it gave us a chance to see if our handgun's would perform in the rain, my XD never let me down. Thanks again Wes for teaching a great class.

He told us about your class, and gave us a great piece of insight about training in the rain at least a few times, just to see if everything works alright.

                              And that is it.
I agree; those are certainly my only CCW restrictions. I had heard that some Sacramento County issued CCW permits has some additional restrictions specified in the "Restrictions (if any)" section on the rice paper.

I just like to know what local LE is limiting in areas where I frequent. The more I know, the fewer suprises can impact me.
