In Bruen, SCOTUS mentioned excessive fees as a 2A infringement. CRPA and other 2A organizations should sue every jurisdiction that charges a fee in excess of the national average, taking into account that the fee in 29 states is zero. Even if the permit/application fee in those 29 states are considered, I suspect that the average will be less than $100, so any amount in excess of this amount should be found to be a violation of the 2A.

Renewal time FYI. Just renewed last week and this was the fastest renewal by far. Many years ago renewals were taking a long time so I would renew a few weeks ahead of expiration to ensure renewal was received in time. My last renewal two years ago was fast but I didn't want to take a chance so I sent in my renewal with 2 weeks left before expiration. I processed renewal online and just over an hour later I picked up my new permit. And it was the new card style as well.

From what you related, I don’t think they lied to you about the error in verbiage. I think the Sheriff was forced by the court to issue the license and it was decided to clarify that the court was the source of the authority to issue, not the sheriff. It’s a chickensh$t thing to do.

The sergeant who was at your hearing was there at the direction of the Sheriff and represented what the Sheriff wanted him to represent. I would take his comment about “no hard feelings” as an indication he may not have agreed with the decision to not issue and was just carrying water for the sheriff.

Final note: I know this has dragged out for years, but the current Sheriff’s first name is “Jim”, not “Scott” (Scott Jones left office in Dec 2022).

    Best.
Thank you for the kind words, and I corrected my mistake. Funny thing is that Scott Jones is still in the list of the 3 sheriffs (including Jim Cooper & John McGuinness) who denied me over my decade and a half of fighting this, and a couple of thousand dollars later. I should also mention that at my 2nd denial, CGN powers-that-be decided to step in and help me by providing a very good Sacramento attorney, Adam Richards (“ohsmiley”) to put together a really professional, comprehensive appeal package for me pro bono. And even though the SSD still rejected that, I will never forget that gesture and vote of confidence regarding my history & character from ALL who were involved in that, including Kestryll, Wildhawker, Ivanimal, and Ohsmiley. And in the end, California’s “sensitive places” legislation has made it so I/we can’t carry in 90% of the state anyway. Go figure.

I Wasn’t Born With Enough Middle Fingers.

Interesting bit of information. I received my Sacramento County CCW through the SB-2 court process since SSD kept denying me over a1996 arrest (non-violent felony, disposition: dismissed). Between 2009-2025 I was denied a total of 5 times (including appeals). In April of this year, I finally received mine through the judicial process mentioned above. Then a very odd thing happened. About a week after picking my card up, I got an email from SSD stating that I must return my permit and to contact them asap. When I was on the phone with them, I wanted to know why I was being told to return the permit. After a half hour & 3 different cops who couldn’t seem to come up with an answer, I was transferred to an “office supervisor” who told me that there was an “error in the verbiage on the back of the permit in the small red print,” and that I just needed to come in to trade mine for the “corrected” permit. Upon arrival I was told by the cop at the front kiosk that they had been “waiting for me” before I could say a word. I got the same “greeting” inside the CCW office - I call that “troubling item #1. At the conclusion, after I handed the “defective” card in, I received my “corrected” one. Turned out the “urgent correction” was the now-absent signature of Sheriff Jim Cooper’s on the front lower right (now blank) IA sheriff signature line, and underneath the empty line is now printed “Issued by: Judicial Decision/SB-2.” (The Court doesn’t “issue” permits, Issuing Agencies (law enforcement agencies) issue permits - I call this “troubling item #2). The cop who handed it to me said “No hard feelings, right? Don’t worry, you can still carry.” No “hard feelings” because I was put through the ringer due to SCSD’s poor handling & incompetence regarding my permit? ”Or because that cop who handed it to me happened to be the sergeant who was at my SB-2 court hearing trying to talk the judge out of ruling in my favor?? I still don’t know what to think about that whole situation almost 2 months later. At least I finally got my “permission slip” which I have been 100% eligible for since the first day I applied over 15 years ago. And in case I have a law enforcement “encounter” which necessitates presentation of my permit and said LEO questions the very odd blank signature line, I have a picture of the original in my phone with Jim Cooper’s signature right there in BOLD, so if he thought he could “erase” history, he was sorely mistaken.

You can still process the renewal before your expiration - it will come with the date that they process it. You might try to find a way to pick it up within a reasonable time - they won't mail it as you have to provide a fingerprint for it.
with the new CCW cards they use your photo and thumbprint from DMV.

Same. But it might be wise to shoot an email to the CCW and alert them. They may have some specific guidance for you.

Where in SB2 is there a live fire time limit? Where is there a National Historical Tradition requiring completion of a live fire requirement in order to be able to carry a firearm in public?
