These are the renewals and new applications they are processing. They may say it's first come first serve but like the example above "a single mom who had an abusive husband" this single mom will probably have DR#s, incident #s and probably an Investigator assigned. These are the CCWs that are getting pushed through not CCWs issued because "I go hiking in remote places or I carry tools worth x amount of dollars" If your CCW IS about to lapse call your Investigator to make some calls. And not the Investigator in the CCW department. There are some people who have CCWs who are in actual danger. And yes they are trying to add staff but the budget is tight.Well, that's concerning for people that need their renewals because they have a higher than average risk. How does it even make sense to let people whom you've agreed have enough of a reason to carry, lose that ability to protect themselves due to a shortcoming on the IAs part. At the very least, they should have a minimum number of investigators that are solely dedicated to processing renewals. Imagine a single mom losing her CCW that she got because her ex was abusive and then she's attacked in that interim period between the expiration and her renewal issuance by said scumbag.Comment

Just curious, do you know for a fact that they are doing a pre-sorting of renewals based on severity of need? It sounds like you must have some inside knowledge. These are the renewals and new applications they are processing. No, not saying they are pre-sorting at all, I don't think they have the time. What I am saying is in reference to what Taelix318 said
"Well, that's concerning for people that need their renewals because they have a higher than average risk"
Just because you are renewing your CCW does not mean you have or are at a higher or greater risk than a new applicant.( but depending on your situation it might) Same goes for renewals. If you have an ongoing issue with someone and have one of the 4 types of protection orders that can be issued. You probably had or still have an Investigator you have worked with on the original case. Is it worth it to reach out to the original Investigator and say "hey my CCW is going to expire in two days can you make a call and see if there is something I need to do to get it moving" Does that take priority away from someone who has a CCW because they hike in remote areas and used that as their GC ?
And yes I worked for OCSD and know my way around. But that is not really an issue regarding CCWs.
Please feel free to send me a PM as I can go into more detail and specifics.Comment

renewal submitted on 06/11/21 missing just my training document, submitted my training document 06/28/21. Got my approval on 07/01/21, got my new license on 07/08/21. So for me it was less than 1 month after submitting my renewal application.Comment

I haven't been assigned yet, much less approved. Been over 3 months for me now.Comment

Mine on 3/21, still not assigned.
Maybe they need to open up applications at 180 days out instead of 120 days."... when a man has shot an elephant his life is full"- John Alfred Jordan

Got approved
First time applicant:
Applied online: 1/15/21
Interview date: 7/9/21
Training completed: 3/18/2021
Livescan completed: 6/1/2021
Additional documents requested: 6/30/2021
Interview details sent (Teams Meeting): 7/1/2021
Interview held: 7/9/2021
Approval e-mail: 7/9/2021
I'm still waiting for the call to process the payment.
The interview was pretty straightforward, just clarifying information from my application. I disclosed an arrest from 30 years ago even though the case was dismissed. It didn't show up in my livescan, but I was thanked for my candor.
We talked about my weapons. I have a Sig P320 and have a conversion kit that would allow me to use it as a .40 or a .357 with a barrel swap. She wasn't sure what to do with it so she told me she would get clarification. The answer was that I can only use the firearm for conceal carry in the caliber that is on the DROS. She did say that it doesn't matter if I carry it as a compact, sub-compact or the full size...they don't measure the barrel, but I'm not going to be able to swap it out for a .40.Comment

Do you expect that using your handgun in 357 in a self defense situation will justify the state or the county sheriff to deny your right to a CCW? I don't think so.First time applicant:

I had a handgun denied on my application because I bought the frame so it was listed as zero caliber in the state system, also they (OC sheriff) wouldn't allow me to carry a rifle caliber handgun.

If it isn't listed on my CCW permit, then the answer is, at least in California, I don't have a right to conceal carry it. Why would I want to put my CCW license at risk by carrying something that I wasn't authorized to carry? I have an option for a .40 on my permit with a Glock. I don't see a good reason to push the boundaries in this case. If for some reason SHTF, I'd like to keep the conversation to questions of whether the use was authorized, not some technicality of what was on my permit.Comment
