Took about 2 months after that certification was supplied for me. I'm not sure how impacted they are since then.

Looks like I'm at 15 wks and 1 day for my DOJ background. I hope that one state employee that does this didn't go to Europe for the summer.

Or according to an online date calculator:

              106 days
              28.96% of 2016
              9,158,400 seconds

                Latest on Orange County

I just successfully renewed my Orange County, CA CCW application and I thought I would cut through some of the clutter and provide some hard information.

                1. They recommend that you apply for renewal **5 months** prior to expiration. The "don't apply before 90 days or they'll ignore it" is just plain wrong. They have a heavy processing load and they really do try to get you renewed before your expiration.

                2. You do need a substantial "good cause" statement. Doesn't have to say you are James Bond, but you need to say something. Example: as a lawyer I sometimes have to interview witnesses in not-so-safe neighborhoods. I also sometimes have to carry large amounts of cash to make deposits. I also deal with dangerous people both in and out of the office. This was enough.

                3. They check a lot of stuff. If you got any kind of ticket from a cop, for example, don't forget to put it down on the application. They check.

                4. The OC staff are very courteous and professional. We are very lucky that here in Orange County we have an enlightened Sheriff who recognizes the need for CCW as a means to individual protection/self-defense.

I just picked up my Orange County CCW, and I was told to start the renewal process 5 to 6 months prior to the expiration date. The printed-out renewal papers that I received actually had the "3 months" crossed out and she wrote "5-6 months" by hand.

I was also told that the automatic renewal email that you will receive will still be sent out, but that it would continue to be sent out 3 months prior to the expiration of your CCW.

Thanks allenmaty. Best wishes and speediness to you.

Question: I never received a conditional approval. (My background is spotless and deputy said my GC was solid, so I've not been concerned.) But did your conditional approval come via email or USPS?

Seems that once its submitted for final, it's about a month for p/u appointment.

Remember to check your bulk mail box. My pick up email got sent there and I missed my first pick up date.

Thanks everyone. I post this info largely for others. When I was early in the process, I read these posts to understand the process and timeline. I'll update my dates moving forward.

FYI, when I took my training, the instructor said he heard that interviews are now in Feb. I hope he's wrong. That's 6 mo.

Lastly, I will share that I lived in WA some years ago. I filled out a 1 page app, included a check for something like $35, returned in 1-2 wks, and had my CCW license. It was beautiful and quite different than this process. Don't get me wrong: I'm grateful OC has a sheriff that has the policies it has. And the staff (deputy and person tasked with manning the email account) has been fantastic. I just hate how difficult our state makes it for its citizens. And the 9th circuit.

It was an email with an attached PDF document. But on the other hand, my friend just got his appointment date to pickup his lic and he never got the conditional approval PDF...

OC: My "Good Cause" statement that got "conditionally approved"

Below is a synopsis of my "Good Cause" statement that got "conditionally approved for further processing" for Orange County.

The GC statement that I actually submitted obviously contained more content and detail. This synopsis should be enough for a lot of you OC residents to compose your own personal GC statement based on your frequent activities.

Again, below is just a synopsis of my "Good Cause" statement, and not the actual statement itself.
                                1. I listed the many rural and desolate trails and desert areas that my wife and I hike and explore where we frequently come across coyotes, homeless, and suspicious characters.
                                2. I listed the many rural and desolate trails where we walk our dog and frequently come across coyotes, homeless, and suspicious characters.
                                3. I listed the many rural and desolate public desert areas, and public/private shooting ranges where we go shooting and could be potential targets for criminals wanting to steal our guns.
                                4. I listed the many bad areas of southern California that we have to travel through to get to our destinations.
                                5. I listed some of the violent crimes that had occurred in these areas within that last year.
                                6. I mentioned that it would take Law Enforcement and EMS considerable time to get to these rural and desolate places.

They did come back and asked for supporting documents like photographs which I did supply.

I can see how one can expand on this to include their personal activities like off-roading, fishing, camping, etc...

                                I hope this helps.
