Someone PMed me asking if I thought liberalizing GC and issuing more CCWs would help or hurt AV staying in office. Here is my reply:

“Just watch the 40 second animation at

What youll notice is that for the past 30+ years there has been non stop change and ALL of it has been from more restrictive to less. Not one state has gone in the other direction regardless of where you’re talking about New England, the South, the Midwest, the Plains, the Pacific Northwest or the South West. Big states, little states. Urban states, rural states. When the economy boomed and during the Great Recession. When crime was surging or waning. While Dems have been president and while Republicans have been. Conservative Republican states leading the way and liberal Democrat states eventually following. And this year all around the nation and in CA gun sales have set records even with demand stripping shelves bare of supplies for months on end. While the MSM may howl, the safe bet is giving people the choice to be able to carry. Right to Carry is the one Pro Choice policy everyone — except for anti extremist — agree on.”

I forgot to take it to the next level: the above is true even within California. Other than briefly when Hutchens first took over OC and pulled all CCWs issued by corrupt Corona, EVERY county that’s made a change has gone from more restrictive to less restrictive: again, rural or urban, conservative or liberal, during boom times or bust. EVERYONE, whether they individually exercise the choice to carry or not, wants to have the choice. Gun sales and CCW applications within and across CA have both set records this past year and have only been limited by supply.

Being pro CCW is the popular and safe bet and only the biased MSM makes it seem controversial. Look across the nation and across CA across the decades. If right to carry was a bad policy, had net bad effects, or was unpopular at least one state or even just one CA county would have gone from less restrictive to more. They haven’t.

It's a smart move he's making to help himself. He's creating a base of supporters by doing this. The sheriff's election is not something most people think about, but for people who are interested in CCWs, it's a very important election on a single issue.

The only way this could hurt him if there's some BLM type of incident where someone with a CCW shoots someone in ambiguous circumstances and there's a racial aspect involved. Hopefully that won't happen, and I know that the people who are getting issued are very carefully selected, mature, level-headed people, so I think it's almost no risk. We've all seen what happens to cops who kill someone even in clear circumstances, such as Officer Wilson. I don't think anyone who has a CCW in LA wants to be in that guy's situation.

Just remember, av said himself CCW will never be shall issue. After being denied in October, I have lost faith in AVs CCW policy. We need a new Sheriff. After all, carrying your own piece without a Ccw is a misdemeanor and theirs zero bail. 🤷🏽*♂️

I heard a rumour that he went to yellow and each station is conducting interviews. I don't know how factual that is. I have lost trust in LASDs ability to uphold the constitution when it comes to the 2nd amendment.

Yes, I have confirmation that he has gone to yellow. I applied in late 2019 and was denied. I applied a few months ago again for the same reason (although with a much better written GC statement) and just conducted my interview with the CCW unit with a solid yellow GC.

Correct, it is still not a shall issue. That's different. But if you read the last few pages or just Paladin's post history yellow GCs have been getting issues which is new to LA.

300 nearly 400 issues of CCWs. I think AV is trying to hold up his word of increasing CCW permits by 400%

It was and perhaps still is in a state of change. Being denied last year doesn't mean you're going to be denied this year. Apply again in October. In the meantime, take action to build a stronger application. Read this thread for advice. Take it seriously.

Not really. He's the best issuing sheriff LA has had, perhaps ever. No other sheriff is going to go further. The only thing that could change anything would be a SCOTUS ruling. Plenty of discussion of that in the National Legal forum, and many people (including me) believe it will happen pretty soon, but that's for another thread.

That I don't know, although it seems unlikely.

They are upholding the constitution. SCOTUS has never ruled there is a right to carry a gun in public. Although again, that's something for another thread, not this one.

                CGN LASD CCWer #11!

We now have (among us) CGN LASD CCWer #11!!!

Another week, another law-abiding LA Co CalGunner gets a CA CCW thanks to Sheriff Villanueva!

And here’s what they asked me to share:

I am now officially a CCW holder, issued by LASD. Here is a little about what the process was like:

-My GC seems to fall under light red.

-They cashed my $10 check third week of Nov. and Deputy called me to go over good cause and to schedule an in person appointment. Call took around 5 minutes.

-20 to 30 minute in person interview end of November. Carefully reviewed all my documents and went over good cause. Deputy definitely scrutinized all documents and made sure she had what she needed to submit to her higher ups for final approval. Deputy also asked some basic questions in regards to good moral character (tickets, domestic violence incidents, contact with law enforcement, etc.) Deputy was also extremely courteous through the whole process, even though I got the feeling all the new applications were overwhelming and CCW department needed more staff.

-First week of Dec. contacted to proceed to Livescan.

-Second week of Dec. Livescan showed completed.

-First week of Jan. contacted to proceed to training.

-Third week of Jan. submitted training certificate.

-Got a call three days later to set up a time to come in and pick up license, and I picked it up last week of Jan. (had to bring in check for $56 and shooting proficiency form). Deputy went over the guns on my CCW again, along with taking picture and thumb print and printing out the license right there and then.

From start to finish about two months (plus about another 3 weeks of my application just sitting somewhere after mailing it in)

Having been intimately aware of the CCW process in LA County for many years, I still can't believe the process was this smooth, easy, and FAST.

Rumor mill from my LAPD contacts is that LASD is loosening CCW good cause to some degree and they encouraged me to re-apply after my last failed attempt. I'll report back on the results. I just submitted a new application last week. Whatever the results, I'll try to post some information that I hope will add to the database regarding acceptable GC.

After much deliberation and letting my GC statement ferment and undergo revisions, I submitted my CCW application to the local LASD station recently. I'll keep you posted.

Good luck to both of you! If you have put enough thought and effort and detailed documentation into your app, you have a very good chance.
