LASD CGN CCWer #9!!!
Congrats to LASD CGN CCWer #9!!!
They have Light Red GC and think Yellow applicants with strong GMC have a solid chance too.
I was going to write about my experience but everything that #7 said is everything there is to say. They are friendly and issuing. There was one other guy before me and they had set up an ID card printer in a conf. room and it seems like they are processing a large number of people. They are looking for mature, stable, non-confortational people. I personally believe that AV is concerned about the out of control crime situation that's developing in LA and wants to build up a base of supporters. This is smart of him. Fair issuance like this will also help him keep control of issuance in case of court challenges.
My only other tip: the phone calls come from PRIVATE NUMBER, so if you're in the process and you get a call from a private number, ANSWER IT! It's good news!
Anyone with yellow-level GC should apply now. It might not be successful, but it's definitely worth trying. For people in that situation, make your application great. Have the right demeanor when interacting with them. Honest, direct, respectful, not chatty or informal.
Final tip: They don't ask for references, but give them anyway, and your neighbors should be your best reference. Your best friend from high school or your favorite uncle or your rabbi are weak references.
Final final tip: do some long-term planning. Cultivate a good relationship with your neighbors. Take actions such as being a member of a range and going regularly, taking extra training, being in CERT, taking other kinds of safety training, volunteering (especially with a gov't-affiliated organization), whatever, and provide documents of all this, to develop strong evidence of good character. It's about documentation and depth.
I am not a VIP and have never contributed to anyone and have no connections or important friends. The process is fair.
Three guns only. No changes allowed! That's right, whichever guns you have on the permit, those are your guns until you renew. So be smart about it.
No large capacity mags either.
No modifications other than sights and grips.Last edited by Paladin; 02-27-2021, 7:57 AM.Comment

Just to be clear, a CCW does NOT allow you to carry a firearm onto school grounds. Under the California Gun-Free School Zone Act (Penal Code section 626.9), the CCW exemption only applies when you are within 1,000 feet of a school, but not on the school grounds itself. There used to be an exception to this law where you could carry with a CCW if you had written permission from the district superintendent (which was probably unlikely in LA County anyway), but there was a bill passed a couple of years ago that removed that.
This is important to keep in mind that there are also several other places where you cannot carry with a CCW. That includes most state buildings and pretty much all federal buildings (including the post office). You need to be mindful of local ordinances as well, many of which prohibit carrying in parks, for example. I highly suggest purchasing a copy of Chuck Michel's California Gun Laws book and becoming very familiar with these sections before carrying.sigpic

A fellow CGNer wanted me to share this AV Q&A re CCW GC for them.
Question: Hello, Mr. Villanueva I have a question regarding CCW. Would it be possible for regular Joe like myself to acquire a CCW permit or am I just wasting my time and money?
AV "It is not a waste of time and money. The standard that we are employing is a Good Cause Standard. And its not a shall issue standard other counties and other states operate under.
The Good Cause Standard is not an impossible standard. All we are asking for is a good reason why I could entrust you being armed in public, for what purpose. And if that purpose is legitimate for example a classic one is you are a [1] business owner and you do a lot of transactions in cash, you make bank deposits at night. For those reasons it's definitely appropriate to have a CCW. Likewise [2] some jobs for example, Real Estate Agents who are showing houses by themselves is another one. [3] If you have been a victim of violent crime and have someone stalking you, harassing you or have a restraining order against someone who has been arrested for violent crime, such as domestic violence those are appropriate also.
Just articulate your good cause so you could fill out the application online. You could definitely reach out to us sometime (LASD). Sometimes the person has the right idea but they just don’t know how to articulate on paper so from here we have to talk to them to flush out the right idea. So there you go"
So again we have an indication that LASD may issue to employees, not just business owners, who face risks due to their vulnerability on the job (isolated, wilderness areas, little or no cell phone coverage, long LE response times), or because valuables they transport (merchandise, equipment or cash deposits) for store, shop, franchise, convenience store, gas station or property management business owners. These employee GCs all fall under Yellow.
In LA Co literally tens of thousands of people could qualify under a Yellow GC standard (which umbrellas Light Red and Dark Red). But we need more people with only Yellow GCs to apply and let us know how it goes to be sure. (Unless LASD gets more explicit and detailed re GC on their website by saying employees as well as owners may qualify or using examples of employees who would qualify.)Last edited by Paladin; 01-24-2021, 8:32 AM.Comment

How much more clear can it be?
You can't write down "self-defense" as your GC and get it. You need to articulate your risks. And you need to articulate it IN DEPTH, with documentation and organization. And you need to do the same with your GMC.
Everyone in LA who has a brain and can think can apply now. If you do not have a brain, or if you do have a brain but can't think, then you don't need to apply.
Edit: the one thing I would say about his statement, "just reach out to us sometime..", is not totally correct. They aren't going to help you polish your application. They are overwhelmed. If you want help with your app, PM one of us who will help, or alternatively, one of LA's approved trainers provides application consulting as a service.
I can't believe someone called me a Karen. How could I be called a Karen for encouraging people to apply to a sheriff who is issuing?Last edited by CCWFacts; 01-24-2021, 9:33 AM."Weakness is provocative."

Welcome to the club. A small piece of advice to you going forward....
Please make sure that when asking for advice you take said advice from people who actually have a California CCW. There are many on CGN that like to give advice but don't actually have a CCW. They like to live vicariously through those of us that actually do have one. Congratulations and carry safely!"Life Is Hard. It's Harder When You're Stupid"-John Wayne!
"Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder"-Michael Savage!

Since AV mentioned that they don't issue CCW to the regular people, it'll be helpful to define who is considered "regular people."
Watch from 12:38
I know two people who were denied recently for insufficient evidence/supporting documents for their good cause, so if you don't have one don't waste your money.
Generally, if your fears/reasons in your GC statement are avoidable, they will not issue CCW.
Here are some GC that didn't work:
Applicant 1: General fear for life due to an increase in violent protests, crime rate, and police budget cuts.
Applicant 2: Unsupported/undocumented threats from an unknown suspect, checking on the rental properties late at night, and fear of getting robbed while depositing money at night.Last edited by Paladin; 01-27-2021, 9:21 PM.Comment
