Just the paper has the thumb print. The card does not.

San Diego County CCW Hard/Credit Card Permit

Has anyone heard of when the hard card permit will become valid as LTC I.D.?

I believe the process is waiting on CA DOJ approval, which means never since they will never do anything voluntarily to make it easier for you to carry.
I wish today's liberals could understand: You cannot be generous by giving away other peoples' money and you cannot demonstrate your virtue by your willingness to give up other peoples' rights.

San Diego has been issuing plastic for well over a year waiting for approval, and other counties for much longer. How long could it possibly take for somebody to look at something the size of a credit card and approve it? An afternoon...after a long lunch?

CA DOJ has had plenty of time. if they were doing anything other than being obstructive, they would have approved it by now, and if they had any reason to disapprove it, that would have happened in about 10 minutes.

Do we know for sure that this is a CA DOJ call and not a state legislature call? One of the clerks at the Sheriff's office told me the legislature has to change this but I wasn't sure if that was accurate.

I can't claim to have the absolute authoritative answer, but I think it's DOJ because:

                1. That's what my clerk at SDSO told me.

                2. The relevant state law says: "(B) The Attorney General shall approve the use of licenses issued by local agencies that contain all the information required in subdivision (i), including a recent photograph of the applicant, and are deemed to be in substantial compliance with standards developed by the committee described in subparagraph (C), if developed, as they relate to the physical dimensions and general appearance of the licenses. The Attorney General shall retain exemplars of approved licenses and shall maintain a list of agencies issuing local licenses. Approved licenses may be used as indicia of proof of licensure under this chapter in lieu of the uniform license developed by the Attorney General."

I just spoke with the Sheriff's CCW department (licensing) and we have some good news.

They have added appointment times to Monday's schedule. This will improve wait times to get your CCW significantly.

AND... they are testing renewals and issuance by mail to see if this process works. They were able to find a way to capture the renewal's thumbprint, so it looks like they are able to process more renewals.

All good news. SDCGO is continuing our work to make sure every sane, trained, law-abiding San Diego who wants to, can get a CCW.

This is excellent news for renewals. Even though my renewal isn't until next August, I'm already getting ready. The next 7 months will fly!

How are y'all protecting and carrying your paper permits? Super awkward size.

Is it OK to photocopy (and shrink) then laminate that?

I just covered mine in clear packing tape. The size is awkward for my wallet. The "credit card" permit fits fine, the paper permit, not so much.

You are allowed to fold them when laminated, not the greatest to lay flat but I did that on the first couple I had. They would do that for you actually.
                          This time I didn't bother.

Mine is folded in quarters and slipped, along with my plastic NV permit in the little credit card sized paper sleeve that came with my passport card. It fits neatly in my wallet and the plastic card protects it from bending and crumpling.

I just folded the stupid thing up and shoved it behind the plastic card. The thing only has to last two years (unfortunately) so I'm really not that worried about keeping it protected. If my wallet goes swimming or something, I'll just call the Sheriff's office and ask for a reprint.

The absurdity of this is just so typical of Kommifornia.
