I hesitate to mention it, but one CAN carry a knife most places too. And, it is trivial to have the knife in hand, ready, when you are in a place where your spidey sense tingles.

I hesitate to mention it because whenever I take training for/with the knife, almost the first thing they say is, "If you get in a knife fight, YOU will get cut. Be ready for it, accept it, and make sure you give more than you receive." (Apparently it is common for people to give up after the first cut, even if that cut was far from lethal. Never give up.)

My opinion is that if I am in a place where the knife is my best option, I screwed up long before that to get into the situation...

I carry a folder, it's there to open boxes or cut the seatbelt if I'm stuck in the car after a wreck, or some daily task. Perhaps dealing with an aggressive animal that won't let loose of a person/child has come to mind when a firearm is not a safe option. Now I can't CCW at work, I drive back and forth to work generally with just a blade and flashlight, so stopping for gas or take out on the way home, I'm not at my best equipped. I need to think on that.

Hey all,

Have a couple questions that I'm asking on behalf of my sister who's currently living in SD county and needs a CCW.

To give some background, she was recently granted a TRO against an abusive domestic partner who was served last week but still has not surrendered his firearms to a LE agency or FFL. She currently owns a handgun and wants to apply for a CCW permit. Will a TRO against this individual suffice in meeting the good cause requirement?

The other question is, she hasn't had a chance to update her address since she just moved down to SD a couple months ago and her CA ID still has her previous address in LA. However she is renting an apartment in SD and has the lease agreement and utility bills to prove residency. Is she good to go or does she need to go to the DMV to do an address change?

The address on the driver's license does not matter as long as she has two pieves of evidence of residence.

Look at when you called and the 1st available appointment. Took me 7 months also; I called in September and my appt was April 2nd, which I obviously missed.

Since Gore opened-up on his GC (thanks in no small part to a real estate agent being violently attacked in L.A.) the SD has been overwhelmed with applications. IIRC, there are only 2 deputies assigned to the CCW dept. My last communication with the SD was letting me know that I just needed to come in for prints and a picture; and this is for an initial permit. I may be wrong, but that leads me to believe I'm approved and just need the photo and prints for the permit.

I'll advise if that was, in fact, the case.

I’ve carried First Defense OC (the L.E. grade stuff) for probably 20 years and have one in each vehicle. I’ve parked my car in the sun regularly on 110-115F+ days (inland S.D. and Riverside Counties) for decades with cans in the car and never had an issue. Looking at their spec sheet, the propellant is nitrogen which is pretty impervious to temp changes. That’s why they use it in tires to prevent temperature related blowouts.

I had a friend who told me a story about a can of fix a flat, however, and WILL NOT leave that in a hot car.

Thanks, that's good info. Just bought some fresh Fox Labs but I can get stuff just for the vehicles.

I just looked on their web site, and there was this quote:

Even if you are only changing your address, type in the firearms. Same thing for duplicate CCWs. If you lost your CCW and are applying for a duplicate, list everything. Permitium is a new program for us and it requires that the most current information is in your application so we can print the card with the right information.

I did put in all weapon information in Permitium, and when I got there, they made me re-fill out the application with NO firearm info.

So, them's the facts, but it's clear there may be some variations in the process...

For anyone interested here is a timeline of my experince for my renewal.

Background.
The original plan was to call for a renewal appointment about a month ahead of my expiration date of May 13. I got caught in the transition from call for appt to apply on Permitium.

New plan - Take 4 hour renewal certification course and submit everything online at once.

Saturday April 18 Took 4 hour renewal qualification. This in itself was a hassle as they were still a bit in the dark about details of SD County Sheriff moving to Permitium. More on that later.

Thursday April 30 Finally recieved my 4 hour Training Certificate from instructor.

Thursday April 30 Completed the online form same day I received my Training Cert. Paid in full electronically. The Order Progress Tracker bar on permitium listed
- Order Completed
- PaymentReceived
-Awaiting Assignement to Processor

Monday May 4 Was contacted by email that they needed a more recent version of one of my proof of residency documents. Since the month went from April to May during the processing they requested I resubmit a more recent on. Which I did the same day.

Friday May 8 The Order Progress Tracker bar on permitium updated Awaiting Assignment to Processor to Pending Appointment

Wednesday May 13 - Current License expires.

Thursday May 14 - Receive call from sheriff's office to schedule appointment. First available was May 21

Thursday May 21 - Arrive for 11:00 appointment. Walked out with renewed license about 11:15


My take away - I could have avoided expiration if I had submitted everything earlier. Unfortunately, the outfit that I did my qualification with took almost two weeks to email me a pdf copy of my certificate. Then took them another week to get me the origial form. I do believe they attempt to prioritize renewal appointments by expiration date. To confirm this I have a friend who is also renewing next week. He got all his docs in about three weeks ahead of time and his scheduled renewal date is the date of his expiration.

As somone already mentioned. The transition to Permitium isn't quite complete. They want you to bring a printout of your completed forms along with original documents of everything you submitted electronically... so they can make copies of them for the file. They then instruct you specifically to be sure to carry the old version of the laminated license since San Diego County's plastic credit card license isn't yet recognized by the state. Also, they were specific about bringing in the original wet copy signed 4 hour qualification certificate - which they kept.

Hopefully this info is helpful or provides some insight to those who will be renewing soon.

Thanks for the timeline rice_man. How recent is the proof of residency do they want, within a month of the appointment date?
I am preparing for my renewal, my permit expires on July 23rd; also, all my utilities bills are paperless since I pay them online. Do they accept copies or originals of the bill?
