Hello! I have a Winchester Model 1886 45-70 Lever gun. I'd say it's in good condition with good rifling and some case hardened finish left. The stock is in good shape with the exception of some minor dings. Barrel is 26 inches half octagon and half round. Magazine holds 4. I know the manufacture date is 1898. Gun does shoot and function perfectly.

My question is: How much is it worth? How rare is it?

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

That would have been a special order gun, and if you don't already have it lettered, you should. For an accurate appraisal, you're going to need more than one pic! Email Bert Hartman with some pics and serial number, tell him Trap sent you, and put "Winchester" in the subject line.

I know 67s, 69s, and 72 have no numbers. Do you know if there are any markings or other way to determine an approximate date?

              My 74 is #86930.

All Model 21's were special order, so the serial numbers are not a reliable indication of when it was made. About 40,000 were made from 1931 to 1990. Anybody that owns one, should get it lettered from the Cody Museum.
The Cody Firearms Records Office has rare access to the select serial number records from Winchester, Marlin, and L.C. Smith.

I sure don't, and I don't know if anyone is doing a survey to find out either.
Your Model 74 was made in early 1941, with 47,270 made that year.

                      Winchester 1886.
                      Serial #24396

Now, it is chambered in 33 WCF, which apparently wasn't made until 1903.

                        try this-

I just finished a rather detailed reply to a question in another thread regarding Winchester 69A rifles. I thought I'd copy it into a thread of its own for those of you who might have one of these fine rifles from yesteryear. Here's as much information as I have: It was a cold day in January...

Made in the later half of 1888, with 16,112 made that year.

This one actually belongs to a friend. He thought it was 1888, so is it likely rebarrelled?

Looks like re-blue, and the stock has been refinished too.
It's been re-barreled, but the question is, by who, when, and where. The factory barrel will have Winchester proofs if they did it. If a gunsmith did it with a mail order factory barrel, it'll have a different proof.
If Winchester did the re-barrel, a Cody letter would have that info, as well as what the original caliber was, and any other work they did to it. I show there is polishing room records on it, so good chance it will letter.
