This would be my first build. I originally wanted to start out buying a complete rifle and pick up a Ruger, but the price was a little steep for me at the time, and I was also convinced that building would be the better way to get into the "hobby." I also didn't want to go Magpul with the thing, but somehow it just ended-up that way The thing I like about the Magpul look is that the gun keeps a very nice, clean look. What I don't like about it is that everyone has it.

-Kaiser KR5 lower with stag LPK and Vamfire MLD mag lock
          -Adams Arms 16" upper
-Full Magpul MOE furniture(I call it bodywork)
          -LMT front sight
-Millett DMS-1 scope with knockoff SPR 1.5 mount. Real one coming on Monday
-I'm thinking a stubby foregrip, but not sure about the legality

The Ruger will probably come next, unless something else catches my eye. Like an ACR or That Kaiser .308

Man, I don't like the look of carbine length MOE handguards since it makes the barrel look too long (for that matter, any carbine handguards on a 16" barrel). I can't wait till Magpul releases the midlength version so I can slap it on one of these

Several days later the bolt was rusted shut but I guess the fouling wasnt TOO bad.

What they lack in sex appeal they make up for in practicallity. They offer railed surfaces perfectly suitable to forward grips and lights (not lasers) while offering drastically reduced weight when compared to a metal rail system. So for a SWAT SBR or CQB rifle for example they make a really smart option. The lighter the gun, the longer you can stand at the low ready out side a home or bank where a hostage situation is occuring waiting for the go command. I know several SWAT guys that love them for that reason. My point being, it is not always about looks. Addimatedly, looks are part of the reason I don't run them myself. I like the looks of rails better myself. However, the extra weight that comes with the rails does have me considering a switch every now and again.

I LOVE my MOE Hand guard on my 16" carbine. Its incredibly comfy and it weighs in at about 7lbs total.

My guess is a sight for the flare launcher

Haha! I was wondering the same thing, and came to the same conclusion. Usually they are mounted on the railed forend infront of a red dot sight and behind an IR laser (on a military rifle). Hence the confusion. Since he is not running a red dot, it makes sense for it to be where it is. It is probably much easier to reach where he has it.
