I have to confess that this thread makes me almost wish I was back in California. The shooting community here is nothing like I was used to. Y'all have some nice levers.Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Yea, that is how it goes for me as well sometimes. Right now, it’s a single-shot rifle habit, with a few more “wants”.
My latest:
Now I’m watching for another Ruger #1, hopefully in .416 Rigby, stainless. After acquiring a #1 in .375 H&H, and a few minor tweaks, I wish to find its big brother.Last edited by splithoof; 11-29-2021, 8:46 PM.Comment

Very nice. They always have some serial number or other gimmick going on. I almost bid on one of their rifles when I was searching for 1873 Winchesters. In retrospect it might have been a better buy, sold for about the same I ended up paying for a different NIB 73.Yea, that is how it goes for me as well sometimes. I believe this collection also sold on gunbroker at one time..
thought about grabbing it but 13 isn't really my number

Speaking of corrals, jump up on that top rail and grab ya a cup of coffee. Or if ya be horseback, pull up on the reins and sit a spell.
A longtime customer sent me these pics and I thought I'd share them with the MLC. He bought these, many years ago, from an old retired TX Ranger, who had them from a long passed Ranger. The story is they served that Ranger in the early 1900s. Anyhoo a Win 92 in .38 WCF, (.38-40):

Not a configuration ya see every day and reportedly a special order by the original Ranger.
A matching (caliber wise), Colt Bisley. Tell me those grips ain't seen some use:

Have no idea if the tales of their past are true but even if not, I bet there are some tales there!Last edited by Horsewright; 12-01-2021, 7:07 AM.Comment

^ ^ ^ Sir, yes, sir! What a neat Winchester! and very cool old Colt...
As my tastes in lever action firearms matures, I find the abbreviated-magazines increasingly attractive. Used to be my carbines needed a full-length mag tube (still makes sense for Texas-tactical reasons) but when I see guns like this Winchester 1892 (which I have never seen before) or the quintessential Marlin .45-70 (24", abbreviated mag, curved stock n' lever), I see beautiful guns.
The .38-40 was a hotrod cartridge back in the day, equalling .40 S&W ballistics but with black powder.
Post #3 in this thread on The High Road firearms discussion board forum <--- link
The 38-40 uses a .400-.401" diamete bullet while the .357 Mag and .38 Special use .357-.358" or so diameter bullets. The 38-40 is the ballistic twin of the 40 S&W but it did it in black powder days. Yes it would be an as effective defensive weapon as the .40 S&W. The .38-40 gets around 1000FPS from a 180 gr bullet and a normal .40 smith gets .....guess what 1000 fps from a 180 grain bullet. If you want a 38-40 for fun by all means get one, if you what more practical (read as available ammunition) caliber get a S&W 610, then you can even step up another 4-500 FPS with the 180gr bullet in the 10mm.
Time to start loading some 180 grain projectiles in my .357 handloads (like Mark and Tom have done), but they'll still be .357/.358" diameter, whereas the .38-40 used a .400//401" slug.
Then there's the .41 Magnum in the Marlin 1894FG (which Taffin says is rarer than an honest politician!) or a new Henry.
But, I digress. Thanks HW for posting these photos and thank yer buddy too for takin' 'em.
