I don't drift too far from home these days but I've been to Mojave several times when I was a young teenager. My older sister's in-laws had a homestead cabin and I spent many weekends there. That was the first time I shot a 22 rifle and a shotgun.
The cabin wasn't far from Black Mountain and I brought home a few lava rocks. There was also another place where I picked up several large agate rocks and I still have a few out on the patio.
Those were good times for a young boy originally from Springfield, Missouri which, of course, is a long way from any desert.

While we might not attend during the hottest months, the Mojave desert is our church. It is both beautiful and magnificent, it is awe inspiring, it is quiet (when we are still), it is open, it is peaceful (when we are)...

And, it may have been the place too where I fired my first .22. May have been in the area just west of Havasu in the early 1960s. I remember the day like it was yesterday; so clear, so cool, so vibrant.

I will be spending more and more time in it in the near future. In fact, I just joined Friends Of The Mojave Road/Mojave Desert Heritage & Cultural Association hq'd in Goffs, CA. (There's an annual event being held there this weekend but I discovered too late and cannot change weekend plans). I digress.

Before Jawbone, there was (a yet-to-be-developed) Avenue S or Pearblossom... Again, this was centuries ago and we rode Bultacos and Hodakas.

As for where the MLC's spiritual home is, well, that is akin to a favorite fishin' spot. We might *show* you, but we cannot post it online.

The good thing is the Mojave covers a lot of territory, and the BLM administers much of it. Find a spot, set up camp, shoot to heart's content (against a natural backstop, more than a mile from any visible structures, etc).

I just went to their website and came away quite impressed! The Mojave road maps and guide information are a must read for anyone unfamiliar with that part of the desert.
In the incredibly long list of homesteaders there is a man with my spelled the same uncommon last name. Possible relative?

Huh. Now how cool is that?

Too, I could see a MLC/Mojave Road Rendevous in the future.

As one learns more about the Road, one discovers that a good central portion of it is now administered by the National Park Service and is known as the Mojave Preserve. There are no designated shooting areas within the preserve, only on either side of it within BLM. One may hunt within the Preserve, however, and we do possess our hunting license.

Too, with respect to Dennis Casebier, we restrict our target shooting within earshot of the Road. In other words, many who use the Mojave Road may not necessarily be gun folks, if you catch my drift.

We will proceed with common sense and good manners.

This may be the sexiest lever gun I’ve ever seen.

If only it were a Winchester.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

I'm going to guess north of $4k.

That is my guess also, maybe much more. I would imagine rifles of this age and fine condition are quite rare.

I can't be looking at guns like that. My wife would be upset when I sell her car and have that rifle. Hard pass!
