Jeez, that is a nice group, and a nice looking rifle.I will shoot 140gr coppers but that’s not really the kind of bullet you’d want to take out to the ranges you are looking at. The TTSX's .41 BC is really poor, with the heaviest 7mm LRX not much better than the 308 175SMK. 139 GMXs shoot well too and seem more consistent offering a higher BC than the typical 140TTSX. Personally, I never could get the Nosler E-tip stuff to shoot 1 hole groups.
For long range and hunting out of state, the Berger 168-180VLDs are nice; or 195gr E Hunter with a super BC, but for long range for solids, the 168gr MTH
I run a few different 7s, one in LR hunting trim is running a Proof Carbon the other a Fluted Bartlien and not really part of this custom twist discussion, a Tikka Superlite (5.95LBS base weight on my scale but only likes up to the 140s).
The 168s perform really well with both my fast twist barrels and what I’ll use again next seasons (tags willing) Elk Hunt.
Some people might say I am twisting a bit fast, but I’ve had ugly stuff @ 9tw+ with the longer bullets.
Even with a light bullet, like a Barnes 14oTTSX/139 GMX they will all touch at 100 with my 8tw. I do not see much down side if you're looking at long range as you should be choosing the longer bullets.
Here is an old picture of load work-up with the 168s in the fast twist, just on a bipod - nothing fancy-
Here is my long range setup for hunting - The Proof on the 7mm seems to perform similar to my 6.5lbs barrel; as does my other 6.5 hunting setup.

Thing is, the base weight is easily inside what you are looking for, but a good long range scope, scope base, rings, caps (if you use them), brake, bipod (all though that carbon one, is only 5oz) and comfortable sling add way more weight than many people realize..
Is the proof Barrel fragile? I mean, is it legitimately field worthy?
What would happen with the precision with each rifle, if you attempted to Launch two 5 round groups within 2 minutes? (Disregarding marksmanship ability, ie what do you think the rifles can do?)
And are you recommending 8.5 twist as an all-around solution? I am anticipating having to limit the barrel length to 23 or 24 in with a heavier Barrel, so I don't need a cart to Lug it around in.Last edited by isntzen; 05-29-2019, 11:55 PM.Comment

Looks nice, doesn't seem to be available in a long action.I went through a similar experience and wound up choosing a Savage 110 Tactical. My compromise rifle.
Had to alleviate all my requirements as many have said, they are competing.

Randall, you certainly are a man of conviction.
But a little flexibility in this circumstance would be appreciated.
You would much prefer to build a 6.5 cm target rifle. I get that.
And I am nearly certain that this rifle would be a dream to shoot.
But a man wants what a man wants. And what I want is a precision field rifle, chambered in 7 rm, with an unloaded weight of no more than 11 lb. Within those parameters, I would like the rifle to perform "as close as possible" to criteria B above - even if the result is not super close. I also want to keep the cost down where possible. This isn't going to be a status rifle, it will be a shooter.
Component recommendations would be greatly appreciated.Comment

Remington makes a Long Range model in 7mm Mag with a 26" barrel and a 9.25 twist. Weighs 9lbs and will shoot the 140 TTSX and the bigger match grade bullets for your 1200 yards.Comment

Sako 85 Carbon Wolf sounds about right. (Price about 2k) Grey Wolf is a bit heavier but closer to $1500
Honestly, a good Tikka T3x will do most ALL of your list within reason. Accuracy may be a HAIR outside of your zone, but it's gonna be awful close.
I'm going to ignore the heat element because barrel whip is gonna be a ***** once you hit 5 rounds or more, so the 10 rounds in a minute is just bogus, but a T3 or T3 CTR is gonna be a good option. Tighten up your requirements, or lift a few weights and get used to lugging a heavier rifle around, because one of the two will have to give.Last edited by bombadillo; 05-30-2019, 8:37 AM.Comment

I guess i missed the part where your requirements were changed/alleviated.
I have the rifle in .308 win, not long action but gets me out to 884 yards before my round becomes transonic.
Note, I did make a hit 1000 yards over this past weekend with 30 mph gusts but it took me 20 shots. Most of that was i had a budget, $300 optic with terrible turrets but still my round was trans or subsonic at that point.
They do make a 24 inch version of this rifle which will get you out further before you go transonic (have not done the ballistics so couldnt tell you how far):

For a 7 Rem Mag get a 8 or 8.5 twist so you can shoot the 151 grain Warner Flatline bullets.
You want and need the long action for that bullet and you should order up a box of them or see if someone will sell you 2-3 of them for making up a dummy round.
You don't want to put something together only to find out your ammo doesn't fit the magazine.
That bullet has a G1 BC of 0.720 so ballistically you are better than most other chamberings.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

I didn't mention the FL because they hold together "to well" for a hunting solid, and pencil right through boars (I only have antidotal data), but also seen enough from plate impacts and misses.
I'll agree the the 151 is something, in that it speed plays a huge roll, even thought the BC on the Flatline, is lower that of the Berger .754, it's going to let the experienced reloader take advantage of the low bearing surface and light weight.
Just food for thought for the OP:
You're more than fine to your 1200 with just about any non-low BC solid, but at ELR distances, I just could not spot the 151s most of the time during the heat of the day, nor the 6.5 offerings on any kind of glass. Hell, even 256s, are much, much harder to spot than traditional bullets at ELR distances. Just something to consider.
As bullets get lighter they are harder to spot and as we switch to solids it is another gear harder even at equal mass. Not everyone has impact lights or cameras. You are entering a slippery slope
