What is the customer hunting with the 338 projectile?

You are correct in your assumption. Moose it will be and possibly Elk. Did Marc ever tell you about his moose hunt in Alaska last year? Basically how his 300WM wasn't enough gun for a Moose!

Ya, Marc has some great stories.. like him getting shot in the ***, while someone was casing their 22 rifle!

            He is another solid guy.

              (Gawd-awful movie btw)

That cartridge seems like overkill for only 1200 yards.

I dont think you will meet your 8" target @ 1200 yard 9/10 goal with a sendero profile Proof barrel.

The 9/10 and the extra 200 yards is the real killer at that weight.
If he wanted 4/6 at 1000 tards and a 10 pound gun before the mount rings and scope it would be a much easier fit.
I would opt for a 8 twist barrel and have it cut at 24-26 inches. Short barrels save weight but kill your hearing as all that hot gas goes out the muzzle.
The difference between a 22 and a 26 inch barrel in terms of weight isn't really that much but your giving away ballistics performance at the same time.
The picture appears blurry even though it is a screenshot but it's a 29 inch 7mm 8 twist blank 0.670 at 26 inches.

I think with the new lead free laws in California you will see more hunters going back to the bigger bores to take advantage of the higher bc solids.
This year I will be running a BillyGoat Machine 338 Norma Ackley Improved with solids on 120 pound blacktails. The cartridge will allow those long solids to fit into a magazine where the 338 Lapua is length limited which affects accuracy and performance.
And I normally shoot a 6mm-06 so that is not a small deviation.

Lynn the projectile has to be lead free, AND on the list of approved manufacturers. You cant just spin up some solids on a lathe and go shoot a deer....unfortunately.

Instead of expecting the rifle to do all the work, maybe you ought to practice outdoor skills and basic marksmanship?

Yeah the better bullets are seldomly on any hunting bullet list.
I am running 26-28 inch barrels on my 6mm-06's and with a 107 MatchKing at just over 3400 fps the 1000 yard performance is outstanding. With the new rules in place I would need a 6 twist barrel to run the GS Custom bullets to get a like performance and that usnt going to happen.
I can run an approved 338 bullet at 3000 with a G1 of around 0.640 so I am close.
Not wanting to jinx anyone but I am thinking the deer are safer this year.
