Yes I know. Magnum chambering is a hindrance due to the recoil to begin with.

Besides the recoil, its the actual bolt length and throw that causes a problem.
Ever run a long action quickly?
Watch out for your teeth and nose.

Long action shooters typically lift their head off the rifle between shots.
That's added time you don't have when you are trying to get a good aimed shot off every 6 seconds.

So this is likely sub-optimum choice due to its cost, but I was wondering if anyone would care to weigh-in on this action:

          Lone Peak Arms Titanium Razor

          or titanium actions in general?

Titanium actions save about half a pound and add $1200+ to the cost of the build.

I have many short action rifles, but only one long action. To work around the long bolt travel problem, I put the rifle in a tube chassis, where the bolt travels inside the chassis tube, and the shooter's face rests on top of the tube.

I still don't shoot it fast though. It's a 338 Edge so that'd be hard on the barrel, hard on the shoulder, hard on the wallet.

OK well, obviously not cost effective then.

The picture is of a chromoly muzzlebrake next to the same muzzle brake in Titanium.
The titanium brake material without any machining at all cost more than double what the completed chromoly brake cost.
In competitive shooting were you have weight restrictions you are sometimes trapped in a corner.
What region of the state are you in? I ask because if you can change one or two things in your list of criteria I own many rifles that would work.

I gotta say, while the action might have a much smaller rolling in the group than a great barrel and chambering, there is something kinda sexy about making the ultimate sheep/mountain gun if no issue is paid to $$.

I was sitting at Spartan and saw someone building off that action for the ultimate pack gun..

While I loved it, I would not want to shoot a 5-1/2 lbs (base weight magnum)

I'm in Orange County Lynn, and I greatly appreciate the time you have taken to provide information here.

When I started this thread I would have preferred to simply purchase a factory rifle that would do around 80% of what I am looking for. Now I find myself enthusiastic about planning a rifle build. I have configured several rifles but never built one. The education I am getting in the process seems as valuable as filling this 'last spot' in the family. Firearms are my only hobby now, wish I could commit more time to shooting.

                      Anyway I found this:

I wonder if there's enough steel in this Barrel.

                      Can't decide:
                      22 to 23" heavy, or
                      25 to 26 medium

I know velocity will be lost with a shorter barrel, but the heavy contour will help it stand up to a few more rounds. And 7 RM with decent BC will easily be good out to 1200 even from a 22 inch barrel.

                      Or am I crazy?

Proof Barrel needs to be looked at. Preparing myself for sticker shock.

                        No.

You will need a much heavier barrel and ideally much less powder so as to not heat the barrel up so much.
You will also want it longer to get you as much velocity as possible to help with the 10-30ft of windage you will be holding.

Quit trying to compromise your target rifle's performance away to save a dozen pounds of weight.

                          Lol.

You have often called my attention to the fact that large compromises have to be made, not small ones.

Velocity brings a heat penalty, and a weight penalty in the form of barrel length.
More windage will have to be tolerated. And no, we're not moving to 7-08. 7 RM is cast in stone because of how it fits in with the rest of the family.

Assuming the absence of carbon fiber, I believe a 22-inch Barrel is exactly what the doctor is ordering. I have no idea which profile to use, 3B seemed okay, you say it's a poor choice.

7 RM, light loads, 22 in Bartlein barrel 8.7 twist, 10 rounds in 2 min. - How much steel is required for the barrel to maintain most of its accuracy through 10 Rounds?

I recommend you plug into a ballistics calculator your expected muzzle velocity with that barrel length and a typical ballistic coefficient and learn when your round starts going transonic. This will provide inside of that barrel lengths capability.

I'm currently waiting on a stock from Manner's for a build that meets some of your criteria, but it will def not fit your budget! In all honesty the rifle from your original post does not exist, but this build gets close.
