Excuse my ignorance, what exactly is done to the firearm? Are the magazines that ship with the firearm converted to only hold a single round, therefor they are "single shot exempt"? Then once the firearm is approved, the magazine is converted back to normal function?

I just purchased an SA TRP non-railed that both my CA FFL and the Seller FFL confirmed the gun is ok for sale in CA. I've also read in an older post that because there is a "P" in the model number (PC9108LP), it may not be approved.

If it isn't, can I have the FFL complete the SSE conversion?

There are size requirements for a single shot, so often the barrel has to be replaced to be long enough and to make the total size long enough. The magazine needs to be limited to zero rounds, as well it needs to be non-detachable.

The "P" is for the package version, which does not change the firearm, just what comes with it.

Yes, a FFL can do the SSE conversion, if they so choose.

M&P9"L" are no longer made .... but I'm sure you just are meaning the 5" Long Slide Pro Series CORE model right?

I have the 5" CORE ... haven't shot it yet but looks and feels great (added FFIII Reflex already as well).

Find a shop who does SSE for free ... I didn't pay any extra for SSE at my local FFL.

Here are the shops in the Bay Area who will do SSE and you should be able to get the M&P9 Pro CORE ..............

              Yes.

So long as it is built as a bolt action or a breaktop first.
              Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Shooters Warehouse is probably your best bet for the lowest price. They have the most competitive prices, and they always have a gunsmith on staff.

I've purchased a gun from every one of those shops, and I think Shooters Warehouse is my favorite.

Also, I recently purchased an SSE pistol from them.
Is River City Gun Exchange doing SSE now? I had no idea.

So in short ya your right it's still the same just new look ... Got confused when you said "L"

They have a Kriss Vector Pistol in stock, as well as a couple AR Pistols in there, so they are probably doing it. I haven't tried to buy a SSE there, so maybe they are LEO only.

Sacramento Black Rifle offered to SSE a 1911, so they do it.

I just purchased an SSE from shooters warehouse.

Sorry if this has been asked but, with SSE going away, home build AR/AK pistols are going away come Jan 1 as well, correct?

I am pretty new at most of this, but SEE is as far as I know for semi-auto handguns ... to turn those semi-auto not CA approved handguns into single shot weapons to skirt around the law a bit is all ... nothing to do with AR's at all as far as I know cause those are not on the non CA approved list .... is there even a CA approved list for Long Rifles Etc. at all???
(but like I said I'm new and may be wrong possibly).

He meant AR pistols. With a SB15 brace on a KAK buffer tube, it's pretty much a legal Short Barreled Rifle, but it is technically a "pistol".

To build an AR pistol from scratch requires an 80% lower. I am pretty sure that come January it will no longer be legal to make an AR Pistol as a single shot, and then convert it to a semi-auto. However, no one seems to have a definitive answer on the subject.

                              No.

The thing is if you build it on or after 01Jan2015 it will need to be built as a bolt action or breaktop pistol first. Then you can convert it to a semi auto.
