What is the timeline for issuance once you turn in your application?

For your first CCW over a year. For renewal approval around 1 month then just take your class.

Round count will vary based on who's class you take. Each instructor has his own requirements for qualification. There is no state standard for number of rounds that you must shoot to qualify.

most classes say between 100-200. Mine was about 100. Best Handgun Training. 1-day class and discounts for military, LE, Fire, EMT. The only thing is it is in Lincoln, but it's worth it.

Can you name 1 class that is all classroom? And can you name one that is all shooting? And can you name one that has you shoot 800-1000 rounds?

I highly doubt any of those exist. Maybe there's a class out there that has you shoot close to 800 rounds if you are qualifying with 3 firearms but that a stretch.

I would guess that most classes require you to bring around 200 rounds and maybe an additional 50 per each additional firearm.

Try Gray Ops out of Sac Valley.
I went through over 800 rounds all 9mm. Only used one gun all weekend, qualified with 3 guns.
Feel free to go to Gray Ops web page and look at their Fundamental & Intermediate class which satisfies the 16hr CCW course.
There is a approx round count shown on the web page since you know all to much.
Some classes may have a little lower round count, some will have a higher round count.
Lower round count is usually due to newbies needing more hands on help, taking shooting time away from the whole class.
Higher round count (which we had) is due to all the classmates being competent and having the class run quickly and smoothly, hence more shooting time!

You're the one bi!ching, not me. I asked you valid questions and now you're mad?

I have subscribed to this thread for years and have taken time to try and help anyone I can with getting their CCW. When I see someone posting questionable information, I call them out on it. The last thing I want is to have some potential applicant decide not to pursue his permit because he is given bad information.

And as for your original post. San Joaquin County requires that all applicants qualify on a certified range with each of the firearms they want on their permit. So, I ask again; who offers certification with only classroom work?

I see that you are now saying you "heard" of classes that are "predominantly all classroom". So I guess I was right to question your previous statement.

And I am familiar with Gray Ops Tactical Handgun Courses. And a quick look at their website shows how their course of fire for CCW qualification is 36 rounds. So you are telling me that you went through 800 rounds and some go through 1000 rounds in preparation for their 36 round qualification? You are exaggerating, just like you did with the classroom only statement.

I have better things to do than to document what the names are of ccw classes I do not want to take from years ago.
All classes are required to shoot/qualify, that is a given so stop trying to split hairs. Some classes spend 14 hours in the classroom, some classes a couple hours.

Please go to Gray Ops fundamental & intermediate handgun page and ACTUALLY read the requirements!
Day one 250 rounds!
Day two 350 rounds!

Like I stated in my other post those numbers can change depending on the speed of the class.
I went through over 800 rounds.

I agree with you. You are required,to shoot. Not all classroom.

As I posted above, the shooting/qualifications test are a given!
There is no reason for it to be brought into the discussion.
The rest of the time spent with the instructor can either be in a classroom or on the range, or a combination of both depending on what insturctor you choose.

Not to change the subject here, but posting on my recent experience in San Joaquin:

Application date/appointment: 2/1/2016
Received background investigator call: 1/25/2017
Approval date: ??

To give some more info - the investigator said that he would move it up the chain and that I should hear back within a couple weeks (I have no criminal record whatsoever). After the start of the third week I contacted the sheriff's office where I was with the process. They said my name was still in "pending" status. When I asked if this was normal, they said yes.

So SJ is beyond 1 year now. Will post when I hear back with official news!

I am in the same boat; started the process a month before you. Heard that it was moving up the chain and should hear something in about a month. It has now been almost fourteen months since my initial application[12/28/2015] was turned in. I HAVE asked God for patience in the past.....maybe my prayer is being answered?

Anyone with a contact in Sheriff Moore's CCW dept should contact them and suggest they look into putting their CCW process online. It saves BOTH the department and applicants (new and renewal) time, money and effort.

I'm sure there are others, but so far I know San Bernardino, Sac, Fresno, Stanislaus, Monterey, Placer, Solano and Yolo have all put their CCW process online and San Benito expects to put their application process online sometime this month.

Renewals are done entirely online (no appointment necessary) saving office staff valuable time.
