You don't need to cancel your current appointment when you reschedule as your new appointment will replace your former appointment when you confirm the reschedule.

I would login multiple times daily and check to see if an earlier appointment opens up and take whatever is sooner than your current appointment. You can keep doing the same thing daily and keep leapfrogging to earlier appointments as you see them available.

I did this for my pickup which was originally scheduled for 2/8/22 and I was able to reschedule for a pickup of last week, 1/6/22.

After you submit your application and have your Livescan appointment; make sure you login dailiy (or even multiple times a day) to your Permitium account and see if you can reschedule your Livescan to an earlier appointment. I did this daily and went from an original Livescan appointment of 4/6/22 and was able to eventually reschedule my Livescan to 11/23/21. I took the advice to do this from other Calgunners in this forum and it worked for me.

For me, things moved very quickly after the Firearms portion of the Livescan completed - I was interviewed/approved the following week. Posting my time line below to show how things went for me.

    Application Submitted: 9/17/21
Livescan Appointment: 11/23/21 (Rescheduled from 4/6/22 to 3/30/22 to 3/23/22)
Livescan Results: 11/29/21 CA & FBI Complete, 12/17/21 Firearms Complete
Uploaded amended firearms list to Permitium: 12/15/21
    Phone Interview: 12/21/21
    Approval Phone Call/Text Message/Email: 12/22/21
    Firearms Training: 12/22-23/21
    Scheduled Pickup: 2/08/22

and I'm still waiting. Over a year now. Any thoughts on what the hold up could be? I've called and all they tell me is that they're awaiting final approval from the Sheriff.

When I picked up 2 years ago, they actually handed me the "new" style credit card thing & then revoked it due to DOJ troubles with thumb print or somit. Renewal was right at 90 days, but delayed in picking up for 2 weeks due to rush of renewals. YMMV

Is San Joaquin the only county still using pieces of laminated printer paper?

Will be renewing in a few months. I think it's just hilarious.

E: Also, how long are renewals taking for you guys?
A year ago when I renewed they told me they had the machine and were not putting our pictures on the laminated paper because they were going to be switching soon and to expect a call soon to come in and get the new card

This was about a year ago but the renewal was 110 days for me IIRC

I had the same situation. I submitted my last renewal on day 89 and could not pick up my new permit until around three weeks +/- after my permit expired
