Do they still require employment verification? do they contact your employer to let them know you are applying for CCW?

      They still verify employment.
Have you read the verification form?

        Renewal FYI notes:

If Google sends you through the housing tract from the 15 and Glen Helen Parkway, DO NOT follow. The only thing mentioned here was that it was open when there were heavy rains. Unfortunately, it is not a normal entrance and is a dirt road and not normally open. A guy ahead of me in the CCW office was on a motorcycle and got in via a utility worker and then found out it was dirt and was muddy. Take the Palm exit from the 215.

The office for CCW is a tan mobile trailer unit set behind the main building at the address listed. It has "CCW" on the side near the entrance and it is near the North West corner of the athletic field between the CCW parking area and main building.

The renewal outline says to fill out everything on the 13 page form, but do not sign, so ignore the directions on the actual form that say not to fill out the latter sections until in the office. In the office, they will have you sign the two sections of the renewal before they look at your paperwork.

The woman at the front desk was not Sarah and she said Sarah no longer works with their department.

After taking a new picture, I was given a 120 day extension, which was mentioned here but it wasn't clear if they continued to do this. She said that "hopefully" I will get a call in 3 to 4 months to schedule a date to pick up my new permit.

There were stacks of papers 12 to 16 inches high on a table in the center of the room with summer months listed on tags. I was a bit behind on getting my stuff in and thought they may send an email or letter for renewal, but they don't. Life is busy and with renewing every two years you have to keep track or better yet put it in the calendar on your phone with a notification, which I do for most other scheduling items I deal with. KNOW THE EXPIRATION DATE OF YOUR PERMIT AND RENEW AT LEAST 60 DAYS BEFORE! I'm not sure if being way ahead will necessarily make it any faster with the stack of files to be processed, but it is the safe bet.

The range re-qualification at Prado is even easier than before. The cost is $35. The targets have the upper area shaded so you know where they want hits and there is an orange section they tell you to aim the shots at. The distance is still 5 yards or 15 feet, according to the RO. The previous three people had up to 12" groups for two guns, based on looking at the targets. With an xds 45 (very small and slim) and a scandium frame double action only 1-7/8 barrel 357 revolver, I put 14 in or touching the orange and 6 a bit high, with rapid fire on all of them. The revolver hits a bit high with running the slower 38+p and I used my sights instead of laser. Their video says 80% of hits need to be in the shaded area, so 8 out of 10 for each firearm. It should be easy for any person who is serious about having a permit to make the hits with no time limit to do it.

I was nervous because so much was on the line, even though I have competed many many times. For a revolver it was an option to use loose ammo or a speed strip for the reload. With the speed strip, one round fell out as I loaded the first four into the revolver. After emptying the strip, I set the revolver on the table cylinder open and picked up the round and dusted it off, loaded it, and rapid fired the second 5. The RO had no problem with it. If it was not for the test, I would have loaded what I could and got back on target, but my thought was that they wanted safe and accurate demonstration of using the firearms and I hoped dropping a round would not fail the test.

Dealing with a malfunction is second nature with probably 15+ years doing competitions and shooting. To practice, and have fun, I plan to setup Steel Challenge stages on my own and run them with carry guns and even my lever action which I compete with. With only 5 plates for the stages, it is revolver friendly and pushes speed as well as accuracy. Yes this thread is about updates to the process, but it seems like a good idea to share what could happen and what you may consider. Make sure you practice enough with your carry guns and push yourself with the practice. It is more fun for me to use competition guns or my 460 magnum at 100 plus yards (the 460 is easier to shoot than the scandium 357) for revolver practice, but it doesn't completely replace practicing what you carry.

How long was the qualification process at Prado? Planning on going there and trying to see when I would have time. Thanks.

That does not answer the question.

It might have taken me half an hour total, on a Tuesday with no one else there to requalify at the same time.

The hours on the Prado web site are not the same as in the Sheriffs paperwork, so go by the prado web site or call and ask.

When you get there, check in at the brown trailer in front of the shooting bays. They have you sign a wavier on their tablets and take your money ($35). Give the receipt to the guy inside the double doors that lead into the range. He had me fill out the range card and then he verified ID and CCW card.

He told me to go out to bay 2 at the 5 yard line and set out my pistols, load magazines and to load the revolver (he said to use a speed strip or just place ammo on table for the reload, my choice) and leave it open and that he would be out afterward. After verifying the serial numbers on my guns and changing out the target, he said to go ahead and fire. When I was done, he signed the card and I was on my way. It took me 2 minutes to setup my guns and maybe 5 minutes for him to check numbers and watch me shoot.

The process was pretty much the same when I used Prado 2 years ago. While I am a member at West End and live close to it, they require you to sign up and go at a certain time. It was nice to be able to show up without an appointment at Prado and get it done fast.

My title stated 20mins tops. Pay the $35, fill out Range card listing weapons, & R/O instructs you to go to particular bay, wait until R/O verifies serial # on weapons. He?ll give you instructions and you shoot (30 rnds) at target. The process took 20mins. tops.

                        Too subtle........

30 rounds IF you have 3 guns on your permit.

For anyone who is not already clear on the requirements:

Each gun on permit will require 5 rounds shot at target, reload, and shoot 5 more rounds. 10 rounds per gun.

The directions say to use only factory ammo. The RO did not check the ammo boxes in my range bag, but I did use factory ammo and I keep factory ammo for self defense and qualifying, but reload everything else myself, that I shoot.

Anyone know what the deal is with the CCW program being down is all about? The SB County Sheriffs Website CCW section says time unknown till it's up and running again.

Start with post #8580 in this thread. It's a long sad tale of the Sheriff's computer system being hacked.
