Wow... 6 months from interview is insane. No wonder they have moved to accepting only postal money orders (they don't expire).
And to think at one point they had the entire process down to 90-120 days.

They're probably waiting for the elections to be over. They probably won't give them to us.

Orange and Riverside, perhaps, but San Bernardino has always been very nearly shall-issue, accepting "personal protection" or very liberal reasonable cause.
Sheriff McMahon significantly streamlined the process, eliminating the requirement for personal written and telephone references that were in place under Rod Hoops.

The only election that will impact San Bernardino issue policies will be if McMahon is replaced.

Thankfully (at least for us, bad for other counties), it is rare for an incumbent Sheriff to be voted out of office.

Hoops was an appointed interim, elected once, then retired and appointed McMahon. The following election, McMahon and one other were pro-personal protection, the 3rd compared current SBSD policy to "1800's mentality"
McMahon won with 62% in 2014.
Hoops won in 2010 with 66%.

he ran in 2010 and 2014 and carried just over 20% of the vote. I see no reason to believe that he won't run again in 2018, given that he lives in Rancho Cucamonga and still has his blogs up from the 2014 run.

His views on CCW appear to closely parallel McMahon, and he favors the return of open carry... a bit of a surprise for a LACO Deputy.

Hopefully, McMahon decides to run for another term.

We are certainly seeing a "blue" shift in the county due to the demographic evolution of the Ontario valley and Victor valley, but thankfully the Sheriff's office tends to be relatively immune unless there is a public outcry over use of force (and SBSD has done a great job at doing their job and staying out of the news).
A side benefit is that the SD also benefits from the tendency of "blue" counties to vote for bond measures and temporary sales tax increases.
