Let the them do their job.

Answer the questions honestly and succinctly.

Don't offer answers to questions they don't ask

Don't offer additional info that you think will help.

Thanks for the words guys. It helped. I was filling out the final two page questions and the officer walked back in and asked how many I had answered yes to. I told him 8 or 10 I guess. He tells me 4 is the max. I was like oh no, then he tells me just kidding. He got a laugh from my answer on detained or questioned by police, "no, not that I remember".
Good news was he gave me back my money order and paper work for Live Scan and told me it was thru the double doors.
              Thank you Deputy Perea.

I have my SB county ccw interview set for 6/27. I'm 62, own a home, steady job, and stay out of trouble. I think I have good moral character, but then I may be biased.

Sixteen years ago I applied to LA county to be a sherrif's deputy. A conversation with a recruiter led me to believe that drug use as a teen would not be disqualifying. Determined to be perfectly honest I met my BI confessed to extensive drug use from age 16-21, dozens of moving traffic violations, two non drug arrests (no convictions), a few fights, stealing from an employer and more. I was summarily rejected on moral grounds and a history of narcotic use.

I have no doubt my LA County Sherrif's Dept application will come up and I see a steel door being slammed shut immediately. I don't want to waste my time or the investigators.

                    Any thoughts?

I would thing with the time that has passed you stand a good chance.
I wouldn't let it slow you down. Stay the course.

First I wouldn't characterize your drug experimentation as extensive, in any interview.

This is an example of adding way too much detail to your answers.

Volunteering too much info shows a lack of discretion which almost always backfires.

Be completely honest, but avoid Oprah Winfrey show like confessions.

So you experimented with drugs when you were a kid, you're older and wiser now.

But don't brag about your consumption levels, save that for your priest, shrink or AA meetings...

You've made many assumptions and jumped to conclusions. Let me clarify. In the LACSD interview I set out to be 100% honest. I won't lie to have a chance at any career.

The questioning went something like this.

Q: Have you ever smoked marijuana?
                            A: Yes
                            Q: More than five times?
                            A: Yes
                            Q: More then 100 times?
                            A: Yes
Q Have you ever sold marijuana to anyone, even a close friend?
                            A: Yes
Q: Have you ever snorted cocaine?
                            A: Yes
Q: Have you ever taken LSD?
                            A: Yes
Q: Did you ever steal from an employer?
                            A: Yes
...and it goes on in a similar vein.

The point is the person being interviewed doesn't "characterize" their experience but merely answers questions that lead the examiner to a conclusion. No information is "volunteered" and only honest answers are offered. There is no opportunity to qualify or explain.

I get the feeling you have seldom or never been interviewed by law enforcement.

With all due respect. Apply for a CCW is a lot different then applying to become a LASD officer 16 years ago. In many departments any prior drug use could make you unhireable as an officer. However Applying for a CCW is more about what you have done in the last 10 to 20 years not so much what you did as a kid 40+ years ago. Being honest about your past no only being honest about what you did 40 years ago it also means being honest about what you haven't done for the last 35+ years.

While you are correct it could result in being denied, the odds are far better that they will see that as far distance past behavior and base their decisions on the more recent and and much longer behavior of your adulthood.

Take the chance. Go to the interview and be honest about your ancient past and proudly state what type of person you have become as an adult.

I believe your odds are in your favor.
