Should I take CCW Class before or after Approval? Like should i got to my interview first? then A CCW Class (16 hours)?

After. If you don't get approved you'll be wasting a lot of time and money. Many of the training courses won't even let you sign up until after the Sheriff's interview.

My appointment is on the 29th.

Booked on the 27th last month.

Just making sure, self defense is accepted as good cause now? I see people say that California is shall issue basically as long as you can own a gun but I highly doubt that.

?Good Cause? was found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court last summer. You will be evaluated on the basis of ?Good Moral Character? which has been an on-going standard. Presumptively, if you have passed the background check for a firearm purchase you will also meet GMC standards.

The application, BOF 4012 was modified in Aug 2022, to delete Good Cause:
            Completing the Application
Answering all the questions on this standard application does not guarantee the issuance of a CCW license. The determination whether to issue the license is at the discretion of the licensing authority. Pursuant to Penal Code section 26160, each licensing authority, in addition to using the state standard application form, will have a written policy summarizing what they require. Prior to issuing a CCW license, the statutes require proof that:
            • The applicant is of good moral character;
            • The applicant meets residence requirements; and
            • The course of training prescribed by the licensing authority has been completed.

Does anyone have updated information on early you can complete the training for a renewal?

UPDATE: Got information from another source. Renewal class can be taken up to 180 days prior to the date you submit the renewal.

I found this wallet, and the Sac County CCW fits in with very minor trimming, Measuring 3 1/8" x 4 7/16"

I like Velocitor's sample, above, but it won't hold everything I want.

This is the Alpine Swiss unit I use from my post above. I like the ID window on the outside as well as one on the inside. The license gets trimmed and stuffed in the back inside slot (after emptying that side of the unit.) Put your stuff back in the slots when you have the license smoothed out and secure.

My interview is this week. How is it? What should I expect? Do they even ask for a cause any more and you have to can say self defense?

Took 10 minutes, maybe. They ask you questions about whether you were ever in any incidences of gun violence (on either end, victim/perpetrator), whether you were ever in contact with the police for any reason at all, whether you called the cops on your neighbors for any reason (seriously), whether you've ever been in trouble, what states you've ever lived in, etc.

He did ask a several pointed questions, like how did I transport ammunition to the range, and how many handguns I already owned, and whether the ones I had on my application were going to be ones I was going to actually put on the permit.

Under the reason, the guy basically said the sheriff only wants to hear "self-defense" as the reason for why you want your permit. He said my past was pretty boring and that I'd probably hear back soon since there wasn't really anything to pique the interest of the CCW board that meets every other week for reviews of the more 'interesting' applicants. He was right, I got a go ahead less than a week later to complete my permit.

Overall, it was easy and quick. The guy was chill. I think he was mostly trying to see if there was anything that was left off the application, either intentionally or by honest mistake.

My permit expires April 19th, so I had to get a move on it.

                              Renewal experience:

                              April 4th:
4 hour refresher, range quals, and submission to sheriff along with needed supporting documents.

                              April 11th:
                              Notification to pickup CCW permit.

                              Not too shabby!

Can anyone speak to the current wait time for processing modifications? I submitted my application to add a firearm 24 days ago on March 23. Am I being impatient or is it worth a phone call to inquire?
