I'm looking into classes at The Gun Range in N Highlands but keep getting mixed msg's from the staff...
Raz from Accuracy Firearms Training and yes he had us shooting from a holster (he can loan you one if you don't have one) to simulate real life carry. Took a private with him few months ago after signing up for the CCW permit and he'll take care of you. No prerequisite class needed before CCW (although would be a good idea unless you dry fire daily - stance, draw, grip, sight acquisition, trigger press, follow through and hit the range at least weekly/biweekly and are comfortable with handling your gun).

As a nerd I watch YouTube vids on all these topics and try to dry fire daily (Ammo gets expensive )

Thanks, I'll look into them, I have a nice Tier1 holster and have been training with it along with dry fire and numerous trips to the range. I grew up with guns and I'm good with them, but I've never done this much defensive training etc.
Agreed on the YouTube stuff and ammo price, thanks for the feedback!

        1/16/23 CCW 8hr class

        1/18/23 CCW 8hr Training/Range/Qualification

1/19/23 E-mail with APPROVAL of CCW Permit. Final Payment submitted. Now awaiting e-mail back on when to pick up.

Approximately 91 days from submitting application to getting APPROVAL of CCW Permit.

As stated above, please be adequately prepared for the qualification for SAC county as the other 2 guys I took the class with did not pass. DOJ instructor will make you shoot (with a timer) from 15 yards, 10 yards, 7 yards (right hand only then left hand only, then dropping to one knee), 5 yards, and 3 yards in addition to reloads in between. Not only do you have to be accurate but also efficient. Dry firing at least 15 minutes daily and hitting the range a few times before the class should suffice

Hope this helps anyone new to the CCW process.

        Cheers
Edit: 1/24/23 - Picked up CCW Permit. Pick ups only on Tues/Thurs for SAC county.

Congrats, and thanks! After talking to the Gun Range Employee that deals with the training folks, I did get some better clarity. I was told they were getting lots of people that knew absolutely nothing about guns buying their first and then signing up for CCW classes. And so, they made some rules regarding training. It was to deter those new people that had no knowledge at all!

After I informed him of my history and training, he stated I'd be fine to take the CCW course and no beginner class was needed. I will take more training after I get my CCW though. Also, it won't be demanded to holster draw, since a lot of people don't carry in a holster. I still will though!

          Nice to finally have clarity!

This is not a practice/training sessionBackground:CoF: Course of Fire:

Thanks everyone for the constructive feedback, it's appreciated!

Everything listed above and elsewhere on the forum is exactly what I've been researching and training for. I've been doing the COF training for a while now and I'm finally scoring perfect with my new CZ Tritium sights. And that's also while timing myself!
I have a bad back and I'll try to get out of the kneeling portion. If they give me the chance to not work from the holster, I'll take it! Dry firing vs live fire from appendix is very different to me. I need more time with it before I'm totally confident...
Agreed the goal is to pass and get the CCW, then I'll continue training in ways I've never planned on before. Again, thanks for the feedback, this forum is a wealth of information!

Just finished renewal qualification at The Gun Range in North Sacramento. They DQ'd one guy for safety (this was a RENEWAL ) so watch your muzzle control, keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you're ready to engage, and when you safe the weapon ALWAYS rack the slide after dropping the mag (while keeping your finger out of the guard).

                1. Barricade tables stay up...no kneeling.
                2. Hosters complicate the process and create potential hazards...no holster work.
                3. The Sheriff's direction to instructors is 50 rounds to qualify with 80%. When qualifying with more than one gun, the rounds can be split between weapons.

Results for a 71-year old, trifocal-wearing, slow-*** geezer shooting a G42 (.380), G19 (9MM) and G29 (10MM). Different sizes; different grips; different weights; different sights; different recoils. Held a slow, steady, even cadence and didn't run out of time with 3 minor ammo malfunctions to clear. Anything in, or inside, the 7-zone qualifies).

                Go forth and succeed!

Congrats! Nice target grouping and that's good info to update us with. I'll train from the ready position instead of a holster position and see how that goes.
                  Thanks again

Sacramento County CCW renewal Turnaround Time?

My permit expires at the end of February. Interested in anybody's recent experience on how long it took to get approval notification after your renewal application submission. Sense we loose days I don't want to submit any earlier than necessary. Thanks.

Californiagal provided a three-day time line from final submittal to notice of issuance in December.

Is there a "good moral character" section on the renewal application now? If so, what are people putting down for this? How do you sure good moral character in writing?

                            New CCW Applicant info

This is an FYI for all new CCW applicants like me that may be wanting more clarity on what to expect in the sheriff's interview...

If you've moved around a lot like me over 50+ years of life, it may help you to have notes on hand with dates. You'll be asked about your entire life and each state you've lived in with years and duration (roughly) and its all typed up and recorded.
If there's ever been any domestic violence issue, (even if it was your ex-spouse that was the problem), be prepared to explain the entire episode including dates. And you'll be asked follow up questions about your current life and domestic violence.
If you've ever had guns pulled on you or pulled guns on anyone, you'll be asked for full details including dates. Very nice and professional sheriff, just be prepared with all your details!

Shooting requirements are very similar to the BSIS, one of the most difficult in CA.

                              15 yards - 6 shots in 30 seconds
7 yards - 6 shots, reload and move off the x, 6 shots crouch or kneel, reload 2 shots
                              7 yards - 6 shots in 10 seconds
7 yards - 6 strong hand only, reload 6 support hand only
                              5 yards - 3 shots in 4 seconds, 2 times
                              3 yards - 2 shots in 3 seconds, 3 times
