Probably going to have to wait 5 years or so before reapplying.

So, I just took a part of my life and consulted with my good friend Mr. Google.

In a few seconds, we located the SAC Sheriff CCW policy on CCW Application/Permit Potential Denial Reasons, “ADDITONAL (sic) POTENTIAL REASONS WHY A CCW APPLICATION/PERMIT MAY BE DENIED OR REVOKED,” on the CCW Landing Page.

I scrolled to the next-to-last to the bottom entry on the second page and read:
Use of marijuana or the illegal use of prescription drugs within 2 years of the application date. Any use within 2 years of the application date may be subject to case-by-case review, depending upon the amount of usage and the time of occurrence
See, it says “any use”, but it’s subject to, ...well, read it.

Then, I spent a few seconds reading the Sheriff’s policy statement of denials/appeals (Page 3):
      Denial of Application/Appeals Process:

All applicants will receive notice in writing regarding the approval or denial of their application. Applicants who are denied a concealed weapons permit will be advised of the reason for the denial.

Applicants may appeal if their application for a permit is denied. All appeals must be submitted in writing to:
      Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department
      Attention: Gun Permits
2101 Hurley Way Sacramento, CA 95825

Written appeals should be specific, clearly outlining the applicant’s rebuttal to the reason stated for denial. Additional information, which may be pertinent to the applicant’s request for a permit should also be included.

Note: Appeals must be received by the Sheriff’s Department no later than (30) thirty days from the date of the notification letter
Now, I have no insider knowledge, but I would suspect that your appeal should probably seek to assuage concerns by answering a fundamental question like:

“Through your youth and adult life to this point, you never smoked dope. But, knowing that you had submitted an application for a CCW, you decided six months ago, it was a good time to try it. How do we (Sheriff’s staff) know that, after providing you with a CCW, you won’t make a similarly-bad decision to violate another federal or state law while armed?”

      Or,

The Sheriff’s press conference after you screw the pooch:

“Yes, we were fully aware that Mr Aguila had smoked marijuana in violation of federal firearms status, but it was only once, and we don’t know if he inhaled. So, we felt he was of good moral character because he hadn’t violated California law.”

      See the challenge?

      Good luck.

My renewal was due in october. I got home from work on a Thursday about 1, filled out renewal application online, and literally got an approval text message in less than an hour saying ready to pick up. Drove straight down and got it. Was less than 2 hours from when i started online renewal app till I had new permit in hand. Totally blew my mind. I've always heard stories that it takes months. I may have just gotten lucky.

Mine took two weeks, including sending some additional documents. The guy behind the counter noticed my existing permits was folded, so he ran my new permit through the laminating machine a second time, folded.

I 'm seeing stories of quick turnaround on renewals, happy it was quick for you all. My previous renewals were completed within a couple of weeks, this go around seems to be taking longer.

I submitted my renewal packet and all docs on December 11th., the web tracker still shows assigning to processor shortly...status pending.

I'm a boring person, nothing changed in my life over the last two years to cause a delay.

Is anyone else experiencing this type of delay?

I reached out to Amber via phone to talk to her about my delay, the phone just kept ringing and then someone picked it up and hung up.

I emailed Amber and she just replied back saying that she is no longer with the CCW unit, she has moved over to Security Services Division.

She didn't say who the new Amber was, wish she did.

Just thought i'd pass that along to those who were not aware of her move.

                  Thanks

I submitted my renewal on November 14th and was issued on December 3rd, roughly two and a half weeks. I'm guessing Thanksgiving may have delayed things about a week or so. Your renewal submission has two different holiday weeks to contend with, so perhaps double the delay that I had? Turnover within the department as you referred to with Amber probably isn't helping either.

                      Alright.

BTW the renewal class at the Gun Range on Watt Ave is pretty damned good.

Really? I talked to someone who took the renewal class there and he said it was big confusing mess. Then again, that was just after the county changed the qualifying course of fire, so they may have been working out the bugs.

We had a great time. Our instructor covered a lot of good information on old laws and the new ones. Range qualifications went really smooth for everyone. The best part was the very end. Our instructor, Sam, closed the training with a brief story about his youth in Ethiopia during a civil war and making his way to Sudan with his family and eventually gaining entry into the states as a political refugee. He talked about the opportunities this country has offered him and his family. And asked us to take part in our elections and to stay active in the community. I cant do the story justice at all. But it made an impression on me.

                            Glad you got Sam.

I renewed with them last year, and Sam was a standout. His personal story ought to be published every time some Sacramento politician mouths off about gun control. Goose-bumps, even for an old guy like me.

Course of Fire had just changed, and everybody moved through quickly and easily.

I had my Sac CCW for 5 years before I moved to Sparks NV for two years. Received the NV CCW quick while living in Sparks.
Moved back to Sacramento for work, go to get my CCW and waited 28 days to get an approval. This is after being in good standing for 7 years in two states.

My GF, went for her first CCW, gets an approval the very next day. We both went in on the same day and hour apart from each other.
