Okay.... without doing a search (sorry "you need to do a search" police), I know on the application it states holsters with thumb break are required at Ben Clark. Most of my holsters are kydex with no thumb break retention.

Has anybody that's been there lately see any leeway with this?

Its been a year for me, but they did not care about the thumb break. Just bring one holster that all your guns will fit in so you don't have to keep changing holsters.

I used a cheap nylon uncle mikes.

They did specifically not like serpa holsters.

I completed my range safety/ qual in Feb. A thumbstrap/ thumb break was not required during my class. I used a custom fit strapless pancake holster with trigger guard tension.
Range staff were reasonably flexible regarding holsters. Holsters had to be OWB and properly fit the firearm (maintaining safety & security). Kydex holsters are acceptable. The only holster discussed that they "do not recommend" using is the original Blackhawk Serpa with the index finger release located over the trigger.

Yeah, I'm aware of the whole Serpa issue. Just hoping my kydex will work. Appears it will. Thanks for the response!

From what I have experience, what my friends have experienced, and others, although the packet talks about needing a thumb break, it has never been enforced or even brought up in the class.

I personally saw quite a bit of IWB holsters in class, they didn't care. The only time they cared about the holster was if it was a SERPA style with index finger release, and any holster (crossdraw on the front of a plate carrier) where you swipe someone next to you.

Regarding ammo, there was no mention that it could not be reloaded. I usually shoot reloads, but for the qual, I went and bought a few boxes of the nicest JHP ammo I could buy. I would advise you pay a few extra bucks and shoot good, new ammo.

I posted other great Ben Clark info here.

I am new to the group and forum, I waited 2 years to get my appointment with the Riverside County Sheriff and will have my interview in a couple of weeks. I am working on my applications and want to make sure that "my good cause" will be sufficient to get me approved. Any ideas or help would greatly be appreciated. Please don't be afraid to PM me for assistance. I am concerned for my family's safety, live around the corner from a known gang banger and was recently hit by a car because the guy did not want to pay his $82.00 tow bill.

Do you drive a tow truck? That alone should be good cause for a ltc. Do you have to go out on calls in the middle of the night, sometimes to lonely dark spots with little no law enforcement presence. Bring proof, if you have any, of the guy hitting you with his car.

                    1. Wording / verbiage in their application document suggests that citizenship is required? I'm a permanaent resident / green card - problem?

                      1. Not sure. But call and make an appointment now. Your interview (and where you hand in your application) will be about 2+ YEARS from now, then add another 5-6 months for livescan. Sounds like you will be a citizen soon, so it won't be an issue.

                      2. I would say probably, but you probably could add to it. When they return your call for your appointment in a few days, ask them. They are really good at helping people get their CCW as long as you read what is on their website. Almost ALL questions people ask here are in the instructions for the CCW on the website.

Picking up my permit tomorrow, took exactly 6 wks since pistol qualification,
five months since my first request for appointment.
Deputies in Riverside office are great and totally down to earth through the whole process.

Are you saying you called for an appointment five months ago, did the appointment, did the livescan, qualified, and picking up your permit tomorrow? From start to finish 5 months? Wow, that is huge news! That's sped up by about two years.

How is that possible? I called in August for my appointment. I’m scheduled for June 2019.
