Guess it just depends on who's doing your renewal, had two of my buddies renew recently and they never mentioned anything about their expired cards.

Hi all, got a friend living in Los alamitos that's looking to apply for a CCW. She told me that the city is unincorporated with Orange County but is still considered OC. Is it possible for her to get a ccw?

        Thanks

If everything complete and sent for final approval I hazard a guess of 1 month.

Did she contact Orange County Sheriff's Department?

My assumption would be yes, why not?

                Figured I update you guys

My initial interview took place July 22nd 9am. While in the waiting room 3 other new applicants came in and 1 renewal was already there. Two officers performing the interviews that day.

When I arrived at the ccw unit desk, I handed them my app, utility bills, GC letter and 2 of 3 supporting documentations. (3rd doc if asked for it)

My interviewer Officer introduced himself and showed me in and I took a seat. Originally thought I would be nervous but the atmosphere was pleasant and the officer was relaxed and non-intimidating at all. We verified my application and had me explain certain areas of the app.

I thought it was weird when he asked if the firearms listed below were registered to me. The officer then printed out a handful of papers, with a tiny reaction he says "you own a lot of guns". I wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing.

The officer proceeded to my good cause letter. Prior to the interview I had my letter proof-read by others and everything looked good. Reading all the input from the CG forum and putting in some work on my supporting docs gave me confidants.

After reading and viewing docs he states "you would have passed with flying colors a year ago", but with recent changes in state law this won't be enough. He said, you must be involved with something that is not of the average person. Like experience something that not everybody is at risk of.

                I was bummed..

The good news is my interviewer really did seem like he cared and wanted me to achieve an approval. At this time I have a 50/50% chance and he recommended I focus on 1 of the 4 causes written. I was told if I apply specific additional docs for my 4th cause by email, my chances will jump to 80/90%.

I have some work to do..

Heck, a year ago you only needed two words "Personal Protection."

Something (for everyone) to keep in mind is make sure you can prove whatever you use for your GC. For example, if you say frequently travel to places that have extended L.E. ETA's, they may ask you to prove where you go with receipts, timelines, etc.

Let us know how it goes.

Then I would ask. Or email Yolanda. There must be some kind of explanation. Or they thought it was out of county.

Los Alamitos does have their own police force but they are part of Orange County. There are others in Orange County that have a city police force but you still go through the Orange County Sheriff's Department. That's what I did.

Google maps has this to say about Los Alamitos:
"Los Alamitos is a small city in Orange County, California. The city was incorporated in March 1960"

I went in for my CCW interview today really excited because of all of the talk of how pro-CCW OCSD was before and after the Peruta case. I'm just a regular guy with a white-collar job, living in a nice quiet neighborhood, and with zero police interaction in my life. I don't have any of the heavily-emphasized reasons for "good cause" on the list that the county provides, like carrying lots of cash, active/former LEO, active restraining order, victim of violent crime, etc. I'm just an average Joe who wants to exercise his right to protect himself.

The summary of my GC was that I do lots of hiking all over OC and SoCal, and there's often no reception out there for me to call first responders for emergencies. Also said that these trails were sites of a good amount of recent violent crime, and I have articles to show to substantiate it. I also threw in a few more details, but PM me if you want the whole thing.

So, I show up for the interview, turn in my paperwork, and I sit down for the interview. The interviewer starts off by reading off the standard application questions and I answer everything truthfully. However, when the investigator reads my Section 7, he asks me if I was aware of the Peruta case. I say yes, and he shows me the exact list of all of the emphasized reasons that I don't have, and says a few times over that my good cause "probably isn't going to fly," and that they "might not approve," but he asks if I still want to go through with it, and send in my application anyway. I say yes, and he asks me to email him a picture of myself along one of the trails that I hike, and I do exactly that later in the day when I get home. I leave the interview not feeling the best, despite all of the good things that people have been saying about OCSD.

The tl;dr and bottom line of it is that despite the countless comments online of how pro-CCW OCSD was both pre-and post- Peruta, it seemed that an average Joe like me may have been getting the short end of the stick, and it may be the case for other regular guys looking to get CCW's.

I was wondering if someone who knows a thing or two about OCSD can offer their experiences or something? Maybe I just I had a bad interviewer, and it was just a bad day? Maybe OCSD really is tightening down on CCW's? Maybe my "good cause" statement was crap, even though I have family who've recently gotten by with the same GC statement? Really looking for some help here.

They aren't generally willing to issue to the 'average joe' that does not have a threat greater than the average other citizen. "Good cause" means you have something that is greater than normal and warrants a reason to have a permit to carry. No, they are not just issuing to everyone that applies and with just a self defense good cause.

One of the arguments that comes up is for being present in voluntary situations - perhaps like your hikes. I'm not aware of extraordinary threats for casual hiking in daylight hours on OC and surrounding area trails. So you're right, that may not fly. If there was some other reason, such as search and rescue that took you out at odd hours, in cover of darkness, or to extremely unsual places, perhaps in known drug areas or such. IMO these are the kinds of things they're looking for.

I had 3 major reasons to carry, but primarily I think it was my job situation where I carry high-value data, and arrive and depart at odd hours, which could make me a target for bad guys. And I named specifically the type of bad guys that could potentially be a threat and provided documentation for it.

I also am physically unable to defend myself in the case of attack, due to age and injuries. So that was also part of my cause, however I can't say if it carried weight or not, nor how influential that may have been.

You won't really know if it's gonna fly or not 'till you get a preliminary approval or a denial. So let us know which way it goes.

I had a pleasant experience. The Deputy that interview me extremely helpful. I used self defense, camping, off-roading. He questioned me about certain spots and I was able to answer him accurately. He is also an avid off-roader so he knows the risks when camping of the beaten path.
