Bingo! Either it is the same gun and someone used the crap out of it or it is a different gun...per your account of events.

Great pic - now what the hell is it a picture of?

I can't figure it out what part of a gun looks like that.

it's a revolver that is the breach end of the barrel. notice the wear I described in the lower left. do you really think that much wear would come brand new? I think not.

It could be that the revolver cylinder is swiping against the barrel when it closes. There are other marks I was wondering about in the bottom part of your picture though it would really help to have more pictures of the pistol particularly ones from say 1-2 feet away so we can see the entire thing...

Not only need more pictures, we need better pictures, better clarity will definitely help, blurry pictures will be useless!

I am thinking the pistol is new and just shows use from test firing and possibly the sort of factory finish it has is more prone to scuffs etc.

Says the guy who brings it up over 24 hrs later. Yes its a dead issue I was half joking when I made my post. No need for you to make more of an issue than it is. Like I said in the post before I hope the op gets the issue resolved.

it really blows that shops try to pull stuff like this, but you should have inspected and maybe taken a picture of the gun, I try to take a pic everytime that way I can be sure it wasnt handled. I hope this gets resolved OP

he made it right. just like I thought right for him.he said nothing was wrong with the gun. I told him he was wrong S and W verified its production date as 2009. I asked if it had been sitting there that long he said ya I said BS. I could tell he has done this to people before and would not deal. His manager just gave me a song and dance to try and deter me. I said " You're a f@(&ing Liar". He didn't like that much and shoved the gun across the counter. then demanded I leave. Ha which I gladly did. He offered to buy the gun back at a 20% loss to us because it was get this "USED". My wife said screw you. It's my own fault for not running a forensic style inspection on the weapon. I just didn't expect to have to do that. I thought it was a better shop than that. I strongly urge every to not buy a weapon from here. What a F N week.
