Alvin did a good job. He was on top of his range and he had the right attitude as far as range safety. When you are RSO'ing, you aren't there to chat, you aren't there to shoot, be the local gunsmith, give shooting lessons, legal opinions, gear critiques or sit on your butt. You are there to run the range and provide good customer service. If you can fit in a limited amount of the other stuff, then great but don't lose the primary focus.I shoot at Livermore all of the time, and was there on Sunday. Obviously some people are bothered by things more than others. Yes, the safety infractions and racist remarks would turn me off also, but the other stuff wouldn't bother me. Even Alvin, who used to yell at everybody there, never really bothered me. At least he seemed to keep an eye out more for safety infractions that the current group of RSOs seems to.
As far as the rules go - they may not all make sense, but they are the range rules. If you don't like them, find somewhere else to shoot.Last edited by AAShooter; 07-20-2011, 1:30 PM. Reason: Augmented list to include SCOBUN's comments below.Comment

I went to Livermore recently for the first time and the guys there were mostly unobtrusive and friendly. You must have gotten different people on duty. The only quirky rule that the wandering R.O. told my friends and I was that our muzzles must always face downrange WHEN OUR GUNS WERE LOCKED IN THEIR CASES. Apparently we had "swept the crowd" as we walked in. We just thought it was funny. We spent the rest of the afternoon trying to keep our multiple cases oriented in the right direction.Last edited by Vacaville; 07-20-2011, 9:03 AM.Comment

no way tell me that's not true you swept people with your rifle in a case lmaoI went to Livermore recently and the guys there were mostly unobtrusive and friendly. There must have been a mis-understanding, either you didn't understand what the R.O was telling you, or the R.O. didn't understand the rules. The rule is that the muzzles must be pointing down range when casing and uncasing weapons. There is no rule about muzzle direction while in a case.Last edited by caldude; 07-20-2011, 9:14 AM.Comment

I understand the no carrying of cased firearms during a ceasefire.
Years ago, an airport baggage handler was killed when a cased rifle that had a round chambered was set down...just because a rifle is cased, doesn't mean that a ND cannot happen.
Having said that, even during the non-ceasefire time, a cased, loaded defective rifle is normally carried in a manner that the muzzle is aimed at people..I dunno.
Problems like the one addressed in the original post are generally handled better by contacting management and allowing the system to work, taking a few moments to cool off and arrange a meeting can be beneficial to all of the parties concerned.Comment

WOW what D-bag
I was going to go with some friends to ceck this range out but I'm sooooo glad I found this. Guys like this ruin it for all his fellow RO's at that range because they lose customers. Oh well.Quote:

1. Rather than ***** on this web site, come forward and state your name and e mail so we can address your complaints individually.
2. If anyone thinks that the RSO duties are easy and that we deal with reasonable people who actually have brought some measure of horse sense to the range with them..... your wrong.
3. To give you a simple idea of what we RSO's see on a daily basis think this: People shoot like they drive. Now look around at the people driving and see what we deal with.
4. Have any of you trained, papered, know what your doing shooters out there had a gun pointed at you and had the person say " it's not loaded"?
5. As for the gun in or out of the case during a cease fire. This has been a range rule forever. It's not going to change because your upset with it. Suck it up or find another range. May I suggest Manteca. It's a place that's a wreck waiting to happen, a free for all, might be your cup of tea.
6. The reason that we on the Mic say " may I have your attention please- everyone look at me is because your too busy shooting the **** to listen to range commands, when you are involved in a screw up because there's no such thing as an accident according to YOUR military you will say I didn't hear that command - I wonder why. Again find another less safety oriented place to shoot!
7. We are ALL volunteers, we do not get paid. We are there so YOU have a place to legally shoot that thing you shoot. So abide by the rules or leave!
8. I would be more than happy to discuss any of these rules with you strait up face to face if you have the courage to defend your position.
9. The rules are posted in several places as you come in to the office area. Ask yourself ....... have I read those rules before I acted like a fool on this discussion page!
10. the rules are for EVERYONE'S safety, put in place so YOU and everyone else is doing the same thing at the same time and not what you DAMN WELL PLEASE WHEN YOU DECIDE.
I am the guy that's full of himself and I am a certified RSO plus I also am a LPRG Board Member so you tickled the fancy of the right guy. Come up some Sunday and I'll let you run the show just so you can see how easy it really is, if you have the good ol American guts to take me up on it that is.
The name is Rich Descoteaux and I'll be glad to talk to anyone with a problem that does not hide behind a website using some name other than their own.
Sounds like a range I'll stay away from with self-important windbags like this on staff.

just wow... Some of the sillier "rules" based on sloppy thinking are the bugaboos for me (all muzzles downrange all the time... great I'll be marking every single shooter with the cased gun and not just the observers, feel better? sheesh, that's sloppy thinking. I for one put 2 guns in a single fitted case facing opposite directions so it's completely impossible).
Alvin was rough and LOUD but he was not rude, arrogant or mean and he was there only for the safety of others. I misses me some Alvin now.Comment

This thread provides some great feedback and insight into the issues at the range. I think part of what is being seen here is the "Range Rules De Jour". Each RSO enforces the rules slight different and perhaps augmenting the operating procedures of the range with their own preferences. This is terrible for the customer because they can't figure out the real rules of the range. Each time they go, they seem to change. The only way to get rid of this is ongoing training/communication and updating of the range policies.
My hope is these comments get used to improve the range and the RSOs and the whole thing is not just "good ole boyed" by the club's management where nothing changes.Comment

Yeah, its nice for sure. Sometimes I forget what its like outside our valley.
This is the 100 yard ShootShed.

During the winter it's heated and with light. Two firing ports, one for prone and one for bench.

The only cold part is haveing to go downrange to put up targets on the framework.

The only bad part is that you have to watch out for elk in the pasture.
I think it's just a little different than Livermore.

Well I did mention I noted some of the rules to be a bit arbitrary in my OP, however this is to be expected, and really does not bother me much. I am safe, and don't get spoken too at any range. This thread provides some great feedback and insight into the issues at the range. My issue is the behavior of the RO toward others, and I am not suprised with his posted response either.
I provided my contact information in a PM, however I have yet to be contacted. I think I'll contact the Range today to see if I can speak with him and or leave a message.Last edited by M1A Rifleman; 07-20-2011, 12:53 PM.The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.Comment
