Hmmm I remember that lady had to leave early last season because her father was ill. I'm guessing she was able to leave on special circumstances?

Tara left early because of her father's condition. There have been other contestants on Survivor that had left early as well due to family members illnesses.

That's the attitude to take when you're in the final 4 or 5. Right now, the game (and it is a game) is more about politics than shooting ability.

We were shooting Colby's Camaro for our magazine and I said they should do blowguns next season.. he thought it was a cool idea.

I'm still waiting for the ridiculous comparisons of crossbows being the anti tank guns of the middle ages so I can pull off a massive facepalm
so far all we've got is the razor cat being the 1911 on steroids........

plates & other objects being obliterated = yay
exploding targets... yeah we can do without those..... But I understand why they "have" to have them.

The whole thing with Jay and the saucer-cup grip as I understand it is he doesn't want to try to hone a new technique to him while he is trying to compete. It is obvious he has a less than optimal grip but he doesn't want to risk trying to learn this while competing. I think he alluded to that already in a quick audio snip they had. It's a risk he is taking to stay on with what he knows and it shows it pays off well enough thus far.

I get the feeling that while these guys\gals are on the show, they are not allowed to be doing their own range time off the camera.

Let me tell you, even sporting clays that are designed to be biodegradable aren't so biodegradable. Every time I'm out cleaning Panoche, we pick up lots of broken and unbroken clays that are in the canyon. Very few of them break down, from my personal observation. Or maybe it just takes hundreds of years.

And so what about the glass bottles they keep shooting on Top Shot? I've never seen a biodegradable glass bottle.

I met Jay at the OC Indoor Range this morning (very briefly, I tried not to go all goofy fan-boy on him), and he wasn't trying to tell them how to work the register or anything. ;-)

Seems like a nice enough guy... maybe next time I'll have a camera handy or something.

Sawyer, the Navy SEAL who was on both seasons as an expert, commented about Jay:

"This is an interesting thread for me, because I've already seen a lot posted about Jay's attitude and grip on some of the tactical forums.

When I was working with Jay on the set, I didn't understand why he disregarded the proven techniques I was sharing with him, which he clearly needed for his upcoming challenge. However, in hind sight, I can appreciate not changing your technique at the last minute. I happen to agree with that philosophy. Under stress he'd just go back to the cup and saucer technique anyway. Might as well train with it with what little time he had, which was 30 minutes.

I guess if he'd have expressed his thinking to me at the time, it would have seemed more respectful, although he wasn't rude by any means. He just seemed kinda lost.

In my background at the top of the spec-ops community, there are a lot of stress courses incorporated into our regular training. None of these "monster mashes" would be suitable for Top Shot, unless ALL the competitors were carefully screened for extensive physical capability and solid command of all possible weapons and scenarios.

Having run these creative scenarios under stress for many years, I can readily identify one thing that clearly stood out to me about Jay. The guy has exceptional mental focus.
In some ways, that superior focus can be more important than a particular skill, especially when absolute speed is not required to win a challenge.

If the speed were a bigger factor, bad technique would reveal itself to be a more significant liability. However, as long as a slow and methodical approach can succeed, Jay could continue to enjoy some great success, even without decent technique.
For me, this is an interesting dynamic. I'm wondering of the speed will eventually become more of a factor, or if focus alone will win the day. Interesting.

I guess that's half the fun. Let's watch and see.

^^^ Very well written by him. I agree Jay has the mental focus, he just wasn't able to articulate his reasoning which left some wondering. However, after a couple episodes it's been very apparent he knows what he's doing. Hope to see Jay in the finals!
