Default I think i've finally found the optimal way to mark ammo cans

I've spent a LONG time trying to find the best way to mark ammo cans for long term storage. I've even got an old thread about it if you search for it, but the image links are likely all dead, and I think I've found the best way, so I'm going to document it here.

let me start by defining terms. I wanted labels that:
1: looked pleasing to the eye
2: were easy to read in dim garage lighting
3: easy to apply
4: durable
5: had an easy way to mark the quantity of contents, so I could easily take inventory

Please note, I'm not looking for the best looking way possible (that's powdercoat and expensive artistic paintjobs), nor was I looking for the most simple way possible (that's a sharpie and tape.). I'm looking for the sweetspot between those two.

After much work, this is the process I've come up with.
1: I use a freeware Illustrator type software called InkScape to lay out labels for printing on plain office paper. In the past I've put labels on 5 sides of the can, but lately I've realized the top and back are all that's really needed.
2: for black cans, I use a white background with white text. For green cans, I found a shade of green that prints "close enough" and use yellow text
3: if I'm feeling adventurous, I'll put company logos in full color. You can also color code the labels, for instance, I use red text to mark all my non-lead hunting ammo
4: each can's label includes a set of checkboxes that I use to mark off inventory. For instance, if the can holds 1000 rounds of .45, and the .45 ammo is packed in 50 round boxes, I'll put 20 checkboxes on the can, and check them off as I pull the ammo out.
5: the labels are applied with, basically, decopage. I keep a 50/50 mix of white glue and water handy, wet the labels down, and adhere them to the can. When dry, it's amazingly strong, and yet easy to apply more labels over the top if I change something.

Here's two examples:
A green can using a slightly older style of label

A black can showing the labels I use currently, top and rear. (the pencil is covering my name)

I use cheap Avery white labels and a sharpie. One label for caliber, and one for quantity. When either changes, a new label goes on top of the old one.

Your solution is nicer looking though.

One caveat I've learned doing this in large scale: do not skimp on glue. Let the paper get truly saturated with a white glue/water mixture, let it run down the can a bit. Keeps the label on VERY strongly that way.

in my limited testing, I found they didn't adhere well to the steel over the long term... especially on cold nights.

white glue, properly used, is REALLY strong... most people don't give it it's due.

I use a label and sharpie like many others. I put a clear piece of packing tape over the label so it stays on and I keep a small piece of thin cardboard in each box with content info.

I use tiny address labels numbered 001 through xxx. The cans have no data.
It is stored in a spread sheet. This allows multiple calibers in a can if needed. Plus I have a total round count at all times.

lol you forgot:

more efficient
more secure adhesive
wont leave behind annoying pieces of tape when changing out the label
bold, black on white for reading in dimly lit space
wont tear like your paper when canisters bump into canisters

I use gaffers' tape and a felt tip pen.

I have been meaning to follow all the great advice in the thread, but I had to organize my sock drawer by color / length / size / condition. Between that and organizing my spare change bucket by denomination and date, I completely ran out of time.

I know, right! I hate it when that happens.

Oh, wait...

I figure, my ammo collection is worth more than any of my (vastly depreciated) cars... a little care isn't a bad thing. :-)

I still use a Brother thermal label printer (QL-570 IIRC) and generic DK-1201 labels that cost $.007 each from Amazon.

If I am going to pay such exorbitant prices, I want fast delivery.

Actually same day delivery

Better yet, within an hour

On second thought, I want delivery by drone by the time I get up from the computer and walk to the door.

On third thought, a floating warehouse of stuff I usually buy perched directly over my roof.

Yesterday, I ordered ten boxes of 4000 labels to get the volume discount plus 5% off and the damn things won't be here till tomorrow. I am irate to say the least. The drone service is lagging here.

Hahah... Prime NOW! is pretty hilarious when some random person drives up in a corolla at 9pm.

I wonder how many people realize just how Amazon offers such stupidly fast delivery.

The next time you see a beat up minivan creeping through your neighborhood at odd hours....RELAX!

It's not a burglar! It's Amazon Prime! AKA Uber for parcels instead of people!

We offer different ways to mark your ammo cans professionally.

We make magnet stencils for you to paint your cans easily and also offer vinyl decals. Our prices are very low. $1.60 for magnet, 4 decals for $2.49 shipped. We also offer custom print as well.

I just number the cans, and maintain a spreadsheet on my computer that lists the exact quantity, caliber, and manufacturer that each can contains...

Easy to maintain, all with no outward appearance on the cans themselves...

LOL, me too. I'm too lazy to re-do a label when I change the contents. So just run a line through and add to the next line with my sharpie.

Some of my ammo cans look like:

400 9mm
Tesseract/Eye of Agamotto
200 38 spec

Those look great OP.

Personally, I really like these magnets:

Even better because they're from a CalGuns vendor with a CalGuns discount

I like what you did. Wouldn't be practical for me because I HAVE to have the handles facing forward since I have .50cal cans stacked 3 high and 40mm cans stacked 2 high on pallet racks...they're too heavy to not be able to slide out with the handles.

I cut a top of the ammo box and use clear packing tape to attach it to the can. A p-touch number labels it and the contents/quantity are tracked in a spreadsheet. I think I'm up to 130 cans. If I didn't need the spreadsheet, I'd probably use some version of your system as I like the ability to readily see how much is in the can. The only "problem" I see with your system is I try to keep my cans filled, so I'd never get down to <75% utilization, so the "count to zero" thing wouldn't work so well.

You can't just use one big label, but there is enough room to put the meaningful information on the handle-side of a 50.cal can. My original plan used 5 labels (one on every side except the bottom).

I've re-filled these cans, you just print up a new "countdown" and glue it in place... in my case I hope to retire and move to The United States before I run out or need to buy more ammo. :-)

Hey, hey, nice looking, i.e. design matters! I like his solution. I use the same basic configuration three sides. The top, one long and one short side, but with Helvetica as a typeface. Its an architecture, design, OCD thing. But it works for me. OP's solution works just fine too. Nicely done.
