No such options any more. Not sure there ever were for the 795. Never was C&R that I know of, and now with the whole long gun registration thing, it aint happening anyway. You can avoid FFL by moving out of state and doing PPT in a free state you become a resident of.
I'm guessing he means transfer fee's like out of state fee's not trying to avoid DROS all together..

Turners has them all the time. I have heard that Big5 has them once and a while but I avoid their stores so I don't know that they carry them for sure. Any good shop should be able to get one thru their supplier and not trigger OOS fee's.

yes I meant the OOS fees, sorry about the confusion.

The local gun shop I go to has one in all black but I feel like it's over priced at $199, assuming retail is like buck fifty.

It's not carried at Turner's anymore, at least not according to their website. I'll try calling them tough, thank you for the tip.

        Question re floating the barrel

I am about to replace the synthetic stock on my 795 with a wooden stock from Numrich. I will do the necessary mods to make it fit, and then refinish it. I figured I should use that opportunity to float the barrel, for enhanced accuracy and consistency.

As I understand it, floating the barrel involves sanding the barrel channel so that there is no direct contact between the stock and barrel. I have read that the barrel channel should be large enough that I can slide a dollar bill between the barrel and the stock for the entire length. So, my first question is, is that the right understanding? Is it more involved than that?

Next question is what is the most effective, lease intrusive way to sand that barrel channel? I notice if I use sandpaper and my fingers, there is contact along the outer edge, which would result in an unwanted bevel being carved on the stock. What approach should I use for effective sanding that targets only the inside of the channel?

Lastly, should I "bed" the stock while I am at it? I have been led to believe that this would also improve consistency and accuracy. My understanding is that it is just a matter of filling the area surrounding the receiver with a material like J-B Weld, to make the receiver fit snug and secure into that space. Is there a source on these pages where the process would be more fully described?

Thanks for your help on this, I will be grateful for any and all comments.

on my old Marlin-Glenfield I simply placed a small square of innertube on the nut for the front takedown screw. Don't overtighten, works great.

Follow up question re Bedding etc

Thanks, but I'm not sure I understand. Is that essentially like making a rubber mount for the receiver, with a rubber washer (innertube) between the receiver and the takedown screw? Presumably I misunderstand, but I thought bedding was about making the receiver fit solidly, whereas the innertube would allow for movement. No doubt I am dense, and missing the point, but I am a novice in this.

just try it first, it may be all you need to do.
              Pretty simple.

Tape off the edges of the stock channel, find a socket wrench socket that is about the size of the channel wrap sandpaper around it and sand in long even strokes. Test fitment occasionally.

Sorry don't know much about bedding.

Thinking of a 795 for Appleseed in the future. I've read about the whole remlin vs original Marlin. What are the thoughts of the megathread? What's the difference between the two. How far back will I have to go if I wanted to get a true marlin 795? Thanks

                      Remlin are fine.

Newer remlins have molded in stock studs.. which have a higher chance of breaking and don't fit a lot of bipod adapters.

Replacing the stock with a Boyds is a big gain anyways..

What has been the best premium ammo to use in this 795?

Is it cci mini mag or is the special target ammo from Eley and others good for reliable function and clean operation? This may be a generic question that would apply to most rifles, but does the Marlin have any preference for certain brands or weights?

I know bulk blazer is coming down in price and had good luck with the true cci darker bullet version. Stick with it or go premium.

Just for plinking, but target plinking to build marksmanship. So I do know it is me missing if so, not funky ammo.

                          Mine love Blazer bulk.
Federal bulk as a close 2nd, but oddly they consistently group slightly left and down... and less tight. (yes I know I could re-zero if I switched brands, its just an observation)

By "darker bullet version" I'm guessing you mean the wax coated kind instead of washed or plated. A lot of people confuse this for bare lead and think that it will cause lead buildup.
When in fact most target ammo is going to be some sort of wax or tallow based lube.
If its good enough for the Olympics its good enough for your Marlin. IMO most washed rounds (except like CCI Minimags) are a gimmick and give more of a placebo effect about the wash stopping leading..

For reliable and clean function Blazer bulk is GTG IMO. Target ammos only benefit is probably going to be increased precision because of less flyers and possibly subsonic velocity.

Key to cleanliness in most 22LR is to run somewhat dry.. Too much lube and you are giving something for the unburnt powder to mix with and gum up the works.

I clean my 795 with CLP and then wipe the parts down till they are almost dry but have a slight sheen. Even after shooting a whole brick of ammo when I take it apart most of the surfaces are clean. The breach face, chamber, feed ramp get a good caked on layer of completely burned powder carbon residue. But other then that there is just a bit of what looks like black sand (unburnt powder) sitting on top of the trigger guard area that I just dry brush out..

Other people will have other favorite brands and other rifles will have others that work better.

I have had the best consistency/accuracy with CCI Mini-Mags.
Remington Thunderbolts have been the absolute worse, and not just in the 795 but also in a Browning Buckmark.

Mine seem to love the Aguila 40 grains High Velocity. Anything not copper coated or hollow point, it just does not want to feed it half of the time.

When did the 795 switch from the swivel sling to the current molded stuff. I have my 795 in jail and I was hoping it was the old ones but it didn't seem that way. It's a used 795. I guess if I switch the stock out it won't much matter, but I was hoping to not to not do that to save some $. Getting set up for Appleseed. Thanks
