More specifically, I'm looking for ideas/solutions for loaners at Appleseed classes, rifles that will be swapped around a bit. So something that is, ideally, inexpensive, removable and adjustable. My instructors fixed me up w/ some foam and wrapped it. A bit clunky but painless enough. Any other insights/solutions?

Boyds stocks. Probably been mentioned but they are larger than OEM correct? Put your cheek weld higher?



chaos47, did you ever use this stock pack on the OEM buttstock? Wondering about fit etc.

Yea I did use it on the OEM stock before I got the Boyds. It worked great, I think it helped raise the comb some and gave a good feel. On the inside the pack is the soft side of velcro loop and the straps have the hook side (one one side and then loop on the other), So you can adjust their placement, angle and length. Even if you don't adjust them perfectly on the inside there is a loop (like a plastic D ring but rectangular) that the strap passes thru and you snug the strap down and then velcro the strap down on itself. They would just have a bit of extra strap hanging out.

I have the same kind of pack on my shotgun. They are great for the money.. the stitching might not be 100% perfect looking, but they hold together. Its hard to justify 3-5x as much money for the real deal TacOps, Triad, Eagle etc stock packs, imo.

Here's a photo of a TacOps inside to show you how the straps are adjusted. Notice you can even move the rear strap in/out, up/down.


These packs are probably only adding maybe 1/2 an inch if that of height..

For Appleseed I always hear about pool noodles or pipe insulation duct taped to the stock. Another I have heard is cut up neoprene mouse pads in strips (glued together under a stock pack).

Other things I have seen is the "sleeve" kind of stock pack, these do not really add height but they could be good for covering up some of the above materials? Maybe?

Yes at least the 2 Boyds stocks have much higher combs, my GF's 795 is in a Hunter/Target and its almost too high to use with irons.. keep trying to talk her into a scope.. But yea I would think each Boyds stock style is different so it would be hard to give a blanket statement.

In general they have longer and wider forearms too. Some have 2 forward sling stud positions which is nice for running a bipod and a sling (not at Appleseed I know as Bipods are no-nos there) They feel like a much more expensive stock and I would advocate everyone getting one unless they are trying to save weight or really like synthetic stocks. They really change the way the 795 feels.

Ok the DISCLAIMER on the Boyds website re: proper fit and making sure to measure etc. are a little worrisome.

Has anybody had issues dropping in a new "Remlin" MM# 795 into a Hunter stock?

The Hunter drops right in. Painless. Same for the trigger group.

Yup. I just put two 795s into Hunter stocks about two weeks ago. A couple of screws and done.

Don't forget these 3/8" Dovetail to Weaver Bases from Brownell's. I've found them to be about the best way to go from a 3/8th Dovetail mount to standard Picatinny / Weaver type 1" or 30 MM ring set up. They're very easy to use and very strong and durable. They provide maximum contact area along the 3/8" dovetail cut found on most .22 receivers. Worth every penny, and they'll never shoot loose.

I'm sure they are a fine product but I see no need to convert the rail when the UTG scope ring works so well. A converter is just going to add weight and height. Thanks for the link to the product as maybe someone will find it useful.

Planning to attach a suppressor or at least a muzzle brake/compensator to my Marlin 795.

Looking for information to provide to my machinist.

Optimal barrel length? Should I leave it at 18? Or 16" would be better?

What are the reccomended threads to be considered?

What is the outside muzzle barrel diameter of a 795?

This is the only information I have and is provided by products for the Ruger 10/22 ( .920" , 1/2-28 TPI )

Any useful information will be appreciated.

This forum is for California, so you won't find much help when it comes to suppressors.

It is hard to remove a semiautomatic Marlin barrel.. You will need to devise a way to pull it and reinstall it without mucking it up. Its not impossible though... do some googling to find the rigs other have made.

1/2x28 would probably be the best thread pitch as you will be able to use devices designed for the AR-15 which is already 22 cal and probably has one of the largest selections of devices.

Barrel length would be fine either way. The drop in velocity is minimal between the two.

Barrel diameter is not .920 I can't remember what it is and I'm too lazy to get mine out and measure... your machinist should be able to tell you.

If you bend the magazine release you run the possible problem of feeding issues as it may not hold the magazine tight.

I have seen that problem come up before many times when people try to bend it.

Got a photo of the case's strike?

Did you modify anything like the hammer spring or sear?
Usually light strikes come from taking more then one coil off the hammer spring.

While I am not discounting inbox's issues (I remember trying to help him solve them)

I have 2 MM serial numbered 795. (MM serial code was the code used when Remington took over) One of them is in the 4k serial number if I remember correctly so its an early one off the line the 2nd is in the 40k range.

Both are fine.

IMO the Remington hate is blown out of proportion and exaggerated. (not talking about inbox, talking about the many people who propagate it without first hand knowledge, which inbox does have)
Yes there was an issue with some XT that where not supposed to be tapped for sights that where tapped.
Yes there was stock fitment issues on their centerfire leveractions.
There is no issue with the 795 besides they cheaped out and went with molded slings on the stocks (sometime after Remington took over as the early Remintons still had the metal studs)

BTW does anyone have a different code then MM on a Remington made 795? Did it roll over the next year to MN for example?

Hi, I'm new to this forum, first I want to say what a great help it has been, second, I just bought a new 795 4/21/2014 and am setting it up for my granddaughter (and me) for Appleseed. Like I said New in the box serial # MM586*** . I have already added Tech sights 1" web sling, Dip trigger-guard and trigger, and will be sending the trigger assembly to MCARBO for a spring job. Maybe the snow will be gone by the time I get it back so I can take my granddaughter shooting.
