I haven't tried Wildcats in my Marlin yet, but they group the best of all ammo I've tried so far in my Colt M4. This includes Federal 550 bulk, Federal Lightning (Champion), CCI Mini-Mags, Winchester 333, and American Eagle. Seems to me like all of the 22 ammo is pretty dirty. Maybe you did get a bad box somehow. Has anyone else had better luck with Wildcats?Greetings to everyone from the great State of Michigan!
I picked up a 795 here about a week and a half ago. $95 after the rebate. I can't believe the waiting period and taxes you guys have out there in the Golden State.
It also came with crappy little 4x15 bb gun scope. Took it to the range and was shooting 1 inchers at 25 and 50 on the second clip at both distances.
I bought three 50 round boxes of ammo: one of remington golden hp, one of federal, and one of winchester wildcat.
The remington and federal shot great, no problems at all. But that wildcat was garbage. Out of the first 10 shots, had 4 either fail to fire, eject or load. Same with next 2 clips, and I just ended up throwing the rest away. The ammo was super dirty too. I dont know if it got wet or something, but I will still never buy it again. I'm sticking with the remington, which has always been the best for me in my other rifle.
I think this is a great forum, and I've really enjoyed reading all the threads and seeing all the mod pics.
Happy shooting to everyone and keep you powder dry!Comment

Alright, pretty sure I'm gonna snatch one of these tomorrow from Big 5. Then buy some mags, and probably sign up for some Appleseed Project training
Was thinking about buying a "big boy's" gun, but then thought I'd probably waste hundreds of dollars on ammo alone learning everything I could've learned with a .22.
Question, what would you recommend for sights for a beginner, the stock open sights or whatever they are? I really like the look of the peep sights earlier up on this page. Eventually I'd like to scope it, but hear starting out with sights is better.Comment

I guess I didn't wiggle the slide hard enough...it came free last night. I only put 200rds through it so far. I plan to pick up some cleaning supplies today.Have you tried whiggling the slide with your hand? There may be something caught. If that doesn't work, follow the take down procedure and see if you find something. The gun is really simply to disasemble, jsut make sure you keep your hand (or plastic dixie cup) ready to catch the spring as it tend to wanna fly out when you lift the bolt out.Comment

Mine clamps to the swivel stud on the stock. What I wanted is to keep the scope leveled with the receiver so I guess my only option is to just adjust the leg to balance the slant.
Thanks for your input guys.Comment

I haven't tried the Winchester Wildcats, but I have been using the Winchester Super X 36gr HP and they work absolutely great. So far, out of the ammo I've been using, they get the best groups. The Federal bulk ammo is ok as well. I have some mini mags that I just bought and will try out, but hear that CCI mini mags are great ammo for the price. As for the remington golden bullets, I have ONLY heard so many bad things about that ammo that I didn't even bother running one of those thru my gun...haha.
What is everyone's first couple picks for 22LR ammo??Comment

just put the 795 in 11 day jail (big 5)
edit: going to try and get it ready for an Appleseed event, I know nothing about slings, the ones Appleseed recommends are sold out, any ideas? the $10 big5/wal mart slings useable? Also, looking for inexpensive magazines, and best place to order those tech sights.Last edited by GoodEyeSniper; 06-11-2010, 8:59 PM.Comment

Xtian13,
There is nothing wrong with your rifle. There are two ways to lock the bolt open. One is automatic, the last shot hold open feature. The other is the original way which predates the LSHO and requires you to manually pull back the bolt and press inward on the charging handle. To unlock the bolt you merely pull out the charging handle and let the bolt close. This method does not require a magazine to be inserted in the rifle in order to lock the bolt open.Comment

Yeah, I jumped the gun (no pun intended) and got a lil worried, but I suppose it's normal for someone to worry when it's their first rifleXtian13,

I haven't read this whole thread, so I don't know if it has been brought up, but does anyone know of an aftermarket speed loader for 795 mags. I just went shooting with my grandson Sunday and it really hurts to load them (I have 5).
I did a search here and googled it, but couldn't find anything. I have a Ultimate Cliploader for my Ruger MK III and that is great, but it doesn't work on these mags.
I'll call Marlin, but I'm hoping someone here can give some help.Comment
