.22 lr ammo availability improving?

CCI mini Mags boxes of 100 at Wally world at a very good price $7.00 each limit 3 boxes.

Got the last three boxes at Escondido WM today. [emoji1417]

I went into 2nd Amendment Sports today to get another 10k of MiniMag HPs, expecting them to be $9.99/100. Turns out they sold them to me @ $9.09/100 again. $975.77 with tax for 10k. They had two pallets in the stockroom, said I could buy 20k more if I wanted. I certainly didn't clean them out! I haven't seen MiniMags at WalMart here in several years, and haven't seen anyone selling them online for under 10 cents shipped - or willing to sell me two cases at a time. That's 33 times WalMart's limit, plus one.

It won't spoil, and it would not be a surprise if it becomes scarce and/or more expensive again.

No one is going to convince me Wal-Mart is getting anywhere near the same amount of .22 ammunition shipped to them, these other sporting retailers are receiving. They're NOT. The stories are everywhere. People who work there haven't seen .22 ammo at their local Wal-Mart's in months or years. I have yet to not see it at Cabala's or Sportsman's Warehouse. Along with several other places. Wal-Mart won't return to normal regarding the sale of .22 ammunition for a log time to come.... If ever depending on tonight's results.

I bought around 15K 22LR at Walmart last year. I guess I saw it before the people who didn't see it.

That included about 1.5K of MiniMags. Unfortunately, it also included a lot of M22 and Automatch, which I traded here on Calguns for ammo that my guns like better.

No Walmarts in my county stock ammo, so a buddy and I would do an ammo run one. sometimes two times a month, with about 75% overall success rate per run, but we'd hit a couple of stores on each run. We'd get shopping lists from our old ladies that would "justify" the drive. I also dropped into random Walmarts up by my dad's house, with varying levels of success.

Walmart is not an ammo store, it's not even a sporting goods store. They don't stock inventory, and their business model is based on minimizing inventory, even in their distribution warehouses. From what I've observed, they haven't changed anything with respect to 22LR being shipped to their stores. A couple shipments a week, of one or two cases per shipment. They only receive as much as will fit into their ammo cabinet or in the cabinet below the register. The only real change they've made is implementing their 3 box limit.

I don't know how long...3 years at least
I assume they have probably had some in that time but never long enough for me to see it
LGS have had it showing up here and there with limits.
I'm well stocked and don't need any
checking just out of habit I guess

Sportsman's Warehouse has CCI Standard Velocity in nice 50 round plastic boxes for $4.99 with no limit. I buy 10 boxes at a time, that way it doesn't sting as much. The last time I bought it I was paying $8.88 for a 550 round bulk carton.

I could probably write a book on how to buy ammo at Walmart. The key of course is to be there when they stock the cabinet, and since everyone seems to be looking for 22LR, the time between that and when it's all been sold out is anywhere between a half hour and maybe 6 hours, twice a week.

There's also the sales windows. 24 hour stores generally sell ammo between 6/7 AM and 10 PM. Non-24 hour stores sell ammo from opening to closing time. In general, depending on the type of Walmart and how the department manager runs things, the best times are early morning, late evening, or for certain stores, random times during the day.

If you know that type of information, and depending on the time that you're making an ammo run, you choose the stores that most likely will yield success. Of course you still have to deal with the resellers, who know this type of information as well, but they can't be in all stores at the same time.

Saw the Big5 ad this morning...any experience with RWS 22LR ammo? Selling for $8.99/box of 50 rounds.

RWS is good stuff. They make 3 grades. If it is Match grade that is a good price.
Any of the lower grades you can get on line shipped to your door at a lower price.

In Fresno there is a 3 box limit on rimfire at Sportsman's Warehouse. I just picked up the last three boxes of CCI-SV this afternoon.

So in other words.... ANYTIME.

If I were going to try to find ammo during the middle of the day or early evening, there are only a couple of places I'd go, and wouldn't waste time with other stores. If I were going early, same thing, I would never waste time going to a non-24 hour store, for the off chance that someone didn't buy it all up the night before. If you know the pattern, you know where not to waste your time, and where you will have the best chance of success.

It's kind of like counting cards at the black jack table versus playing slots. No guarantees, but with a little work, you have some ability to improve your odds.

RWS is good stuff. They make 3 grades. If it is Match grade that is a good price.
Any of the lower grades you can get on line shipped to your door at a lower price.

They actually have over a dozen versions of 22LR, plus the other brands that they manufacture under different labels (Norma, Geco). At that price, it seems like RWS Target Rifle. If it were any of the other grades, like RWS-50 or RWS-100, I'd buy all they had if I were you. That price is slightly high for Target Rifle, but way cheap for RWS-50 (like less than 1/2 price).

A guy at the range two weekends ago tossed me 15 round of RWS-50 to try, and it shot really nice clover leaf groups. Nothing resembling a flyer. Can't afford the stuff myself, but it was nice to see what it could do.

I've got two bricks of 22 short...you I have to bring some 22 short on every trip. The lever guns love some short, so do the bolt action

Tried Remington Golden Bullets in Bucket OBullets with my Buckmark last night, I was pissed off... FTFire like 4-7 round out of 100. The bullet would also fail to manually eject because it was stuck in the barrel. I had to use tweezers to tug on the lip to pull it out as the ejector just couldn't pull it out. When I manually loaded the bullet with finger, I could feel the bullet snap into the barrel like there was a ring, which was thus causing ejector issues. There were no FTE on fired rounds.
I noted that the striker left a small mark on the rounds, once I reseated the round in a different position it fired fine except for 1 round which failed to fire 4 times.

Not impressed... perhaps because the bucket was banged and the primer dislodged? Saw on youtube it might be the reason, but I didn't abuse the bucket, so must be the store or distributor.

My Federal Target Match on the other hand has only FTFire twice out of 650 rounds. The first round I'm not sure, but the second fired after rotation.
