    What Caliber for pigs.

I am buying a bolt action just for pig hunts.
What is the best over all caliber. These pigs are 200-800 lbs.
I will be shooting them from 100-200 yards.

308/30-06 will get the job done.

Ive personally seen .223/5.56, 30-30, and 7.62x39 do the job from about 150yds and in. Ive also done dog and knife only hunts....

        30-06 imo.

Extremely versatile cartridge, will certainly send the mail as far as you need to send it, and if your gun store only has a few calibers of rifle ammo in stock, I would bet that 30-06 would be one of them.

If i had to hunt hog with the rifles i own i would go with the 30 30 or the sks and i do have bigger and smaller calibers

if i could never get close then a 308 or my K31

Anything that can send a bullet over 140 grains over 2700 FPS should do the trick. Bigger bullets at that range would be more fun, though.

I was thinking of a 30 06 for that very reason. That ammo I have seen on shelves every where. Your right.
As far as knives and dogs... It is not legal in California...
I think I am on Cal guns Site.
30 06 it is! Thanks for the fast reply

What about 7.62x54R? Or is that no good?

All great choices above. I will throw my hat in for the 45-70. Has a ton of energy and a 0.458" hole.

Speaking of .458 holes, how 'bout .458 SOCOM?

Most the loads I have seen are basically dumbed down 45/70.

I would suggest a rem 700 .308. Great ammo selection and a easy rifle to sell if you decide to try something later.

                              i use and recommend .223,7.62x39, and 7.62x54r.
for .223 i aim for the head.
