Has anybody used a .357 lever gun for hogs?
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

As far as knives and dogs... It is not legal in California...
I think I am on Cal guns Site.
I too have dropped pigs with a 22lr but not at 200yards and the pig was under 150lbs. 30 06 it is! Thanks for the fast reply
Check the screen name. Born and raised in HI - very legal to hunt with a dog and knife.

Haven't had the opportunity to hunt in CA so I don't know the laws. Was just putting it out there since so many people think the only way to bring a hog down is with a .308 or bigger round.

I've used 7.62x39mm and .303British for pigs. Kinda want to build a .300Blackout for pig use.

                  Friends have used 5.56x45mm/.223, .243Winchester, 6.8x43mm, .300Blackout, 7.62x39mm, 30-30, 7.62x51mm/.308, .30-06, .458Socom and .45/70.

                    For pig hunting in CA...

Need a hunting license and a wild pig tag.

Pigs are in season all year round and there is no bag limit on them.

                    Pigs can be taken using:
                    Centerfire rifle
                    Blackpowder rifle/musket
Centerfire handgun with minimum 4" barrel length
                    Shotgun
                    Bow
                    Crossbow

A vendor at a gunshow I went to said they have helicopter rentals in Texas that fly over pigs to shoot and most people use 300 blackout.

Well the dog isn't wearing a silly, floppy hat so I'm going with the dog.

Getting back to the OP's Question....

California DFG states that "pigs are harder to kill than deer, but easier to kill than Elk" - then they get to the heart of the question: How big a pig are you going after? Pigs can weigh from 50-350+ pounds.

If you are going after smaller pigs (less than 90lbs), something as small as a .243, a 7.62x39 or a .30-30 will do. Larger pigs require something larger - such as a .270 or better. Think something you would use on Elk. .308, .30-06, 7.62x54r would all be fine - as would anything bigger.

California DFG publishes a guide to hunting pigs in which they rate many cartridges. You might want to check it out.

Dont shoot em with anything less than 308, 270 or 30-06.

My problem is with the pigs that are 200-800 lbs, my brother in law took a 804lb ER the day before thanksgiving with a 338 Lapua. I have shot at them with my 5.56 AR from 125 yards... I hit them but they run off and die.
And I didn't want to spend the money on a 338. That is why I started this thread!
                                Thank you to all.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
