I have put lots of proof barrels on actions though and they seem to be great for hunters as they shoot the first couple shots really well, usually touching.
They usually don't really fall apart until at least the 3rd or 4th shot.
How different is that from an all-steel pencil barrel?

An all steel pencil barrel is about $300 less expensive.

The point is they do NOT walk like most steel pencil barrels, they will hold a string of fire. That’s Randell either thinking of the first gen Proof carbon barrels, spun them wrong or my personal bet; being a bit dramatic for effect.

Now the heat from a long string causes mirage much faster than your typical target barrel, this can cause unaware shooters group size issues as optical the target is not where it appears. Target barrels will do the same just not as quickly and that is why on some bench type guns, you will see mirage shields. Understanding barrel mirage and mirage in general, goes a long ways no matter what barrel material you use.

If all you want is the 2-3 shots and the lowest possible weight, use the good feather weight barrels. Theses barrels can be much lighter than the carbon wrapped as the amount of metal is nearly the same. Of course, the Carbon is added on top of a thin SS barrel, in this case, to add rigidity but it adds weight.

No doubt they are $370- $400 more for the barrel blank. The real question is, do you need or even want, target type strings of fire out of a super light rifle????

What a lot of long range hunters who want to shoot a lighter gun have struggled with, is load and dope development, with pencil weigh barrels. The current crop of Proof Barrels has really help make that entire process much faster, easier and at the end of the day more accurate because our base data is better. BUT, not everyone needs or even cares about that, some mountain hunters want even lighter options.

However, there really are target applications, Field Matches like shooting Carl Taylor's Field matches up in Washington, Mammoth SC etc. You hike all day up in the Hills, and the string of fire is 10-12rounds per station. For Carl's match I'd shoot my lighter SA using my Proof/T4-A Manors. I would not be shooting Proof barrels if they were the same, or even close under a longer string of fire, as the pencil weight offerings.

Heck this brings up a good point: Check out our Fathers Day PRS Regional Series match ~ it is a hiking course, if you get a bad draw you might a 4 mile round trip, but for most it is about 2 miles. I still carry a heavy PRS gun, but see the value in using a Proof to make the day easier.. It is sure to have a low turnout do to Fathers Day, so having the extra hike of the bad draws isn't going to happen. We have a great side match/entry level prone division, ideal for hunters looking to stretch it out and test their dope across a divers FOF. https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1537503

How do you define "hold a string of fire"? I am confused at this point. Do you mean they won't shift POI as much? If so, what kind of shift has been measured?

                Yes.

Actually, what I meant to say was; Hell Yes.

What are these Mirage Shields you speak of?
The carbon fiber cannot be a very good conductor of heat, so I am assuming these are muzzle mounted devices. Or are they more often employed on steel barrels? Are they easily detachable? Are they heavy?

Carbon conducts heat much faster than steel.

A mirage band is a cover the full length of the barrel.
Think about a 2" wide horizontal blind like you have hanging inside of a sliding glass door at your house.
Now cut a piece the length of your barrel and affix it with 3 Velcro dots.
The heat now is deflected around the blind so it won't go directly in front of your scope.

I have friends who say all they want is 1/2 inch accuracy but personally I want all the accuracy I can get on ANY firearm regardless of it's use.
Heat shields redirect the waves coming off of a hot barrel.
As Randall pointed out most use Velcro dots to attach them and they are just thin strips of just about anything to redirect the waves. In a pinch you can lay a strip of target over your barrel to help move the wave left or right.
I will try and post a picture after work.
The picture shows Jerry "The Champ" Tierney using a piece of cardboard on his barrel.

I wonder if this hunter had all the hunting rifle requirements the OP listed?

I would be bored if I had a rifle that meets the requirements from A to E.

That guide should have been telling the shooter where to hold.
He missed high twice which is very common with that much of an angle at that distance.
